Takahiro Iwasaki - Miniature Scenes made of Fibers, Dust & Hair

The only place for cloth fibers, human hair and dust in my home is the vacuum cleaner, but that's not the case for Japanese artist Takahiro Iwasaki, who loves to use them to create detailed miniature scenes that depict Japan's industrial rise.

Masters of Modern Jewellery

Posted by The Justified Sinner

A busy week! I spent all day in London on Thursday, first of all visiting a private breakfast view of the superb "Masters of Modern Jewellery" exhibition at Beetles + Huxley, curated by Joanna Hardy. Joanna is something of a powerhouse in the jewellery world more than you might, perhaps, imagine if your only knowledge of her is as the antiques expert on "The Antiques Roadshow". (I've previously reviewed her luxuriously-produced "Emeralds" book here.)

Jaquet-Droz Automata

The Jaquet-Droz automata, among all the numerous automata built by the Jaquet-Droz watchmaker family, refer to three doll sized automata built between 1768 and 1774.

David Samuel Stern - Woven Photography

The use of multiple-exposure techniques to create eerie, ghostlike effects in photography and film is a trope that most of us are familiar with. The work of photographer David Samuel Stern, however, stands out in that he eschews both the usual analog and digital means of achieving such effects.

Christel van der Laan - Hol(e)ier Than Thou

In 2008, I discovered that the most precious material of them all, had been quietly sitting in front of me on my soldering bench. Ceramic honeycomb block is better known for its ability to distribute heat during soldering than for being a prized element in a piece of jewellery.  Pure, white and hol(e)y, I never cease to be captivated by the extraordinary beauty of this material and the endless possibilities it presents.

Morgan Brig - Complexity of Emotion

Rummaging around just under the surface is a favorite past time of mine. Interesting emotions live there which I love to dig up, take apart and reassemble. I'm looking for clarification or a new understanding of the transitions and contradictions that often lie within.

Lizzie Thomas - Rather than with Words

"I am a Children’s Author/Illustrator and Designer/Maker based between Brighton and London, UK. Narrative is central to my crafted work. I write with materials and images rather than with words."

Noi Volkov - Ceramics & Paintings

Art History has always been a passion of mine. My work depicts famous works, artists, and artistic movements in various ways to illustrate their influence on the art world.

Knitting in Motion: Sibling, London UK

A collaboration between Joe Bates, Sid Bryan and Cozette McCreery, SIBLING is all for one and one for all. Before setting up SIBLING, the designers each worked for many brands and design houses, learning that it is “never as easy as it looks and most importantly that invaluable lesson in how not to do something. Also if all else fails: cup of tea, a nice biscuit and laugh!”

The Victoria and Albert Museum welcomes applications for ‘Creating Innovative Learning Programmes’, its new one week intensive course. This is a unique training opportunity for museum professionals from overseas who are interested in attracting and programming for a range of museum audiences.

Portable Fire: A History of Match Safes

Vesta cases, vesta boxes, or pocket match safes or matchsafes were small portable boxes made in a great variety of forms with snapshut covers to contain vestas (short matches) and keep them dry.
