Introducing Michelle Urbanek

By Leisa Rich for her crafthaus blog series Invisible:VisAble:

"The creative process for making pieces for Invisible:VisAble was a slow start at first, because I wasn’t sure how I was “disabled” by my disordered eating. Yet, as I continued to sketch in my visual journal, it became clear that there was anger. Anger at being frustrated. Frustrated by making mistakes. Mistakenly judging that as unworthiness. I was writing (or drawing) myself off as being damaged. And that had me angry again, so the cycle continued. Being unbalanced does not equate damage. It means that I have to be more mindful than I normally allow myself. And when I don’t remember to allow myself, I fall off kilter easily."

New Platform Opens Up for Young Writers

On February 1st, 2015, jewelryunder30.com, an online platform to encourage young makers to write and hone their unique voice, is going live.

This site was conceptualized at the 2014 SNAG conference in Minneapolis, where Bruce Metcalf, was taken aback by the number of younger individuals that were engaged critically, but lacked a place to express the thoughts and opinions of the up and coming generation regarding contemporary jewelry. From heated panel discussions, to individual conversations about the deficit of writing in our field from the younger, emerging artists it was clear a platform had to be implemented for these conversations to flourish, and thus this forum is our answer.

Tales From the Tool Box

This crafthaus online exhibition is a showcase for narrative work. With over 234 images it was decided that the exhibition would be shown in two parts:

Part 1

Part 2

I would like to personally thank all the makers who took the time to submit work for this on-line exhibition.

Project Update:

The first few entries have started to come in, Rachel and I are very excited! The other great news is that our project has definitely spread well beyond US/Canada participation. We received info and inquiries from Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, UK, Germany, Holland, Argentina and just this morning: India! Seems like makers are truly eager to work together and overcome their differences. We couldn't be happier and prouder. Carry on!!

Here's Tae Us, And Wha's Like Us? A Perverse Post For Burns' Night!

By The Justified Sinner

So I am not going to write about Robert Burns at all. I don't mind Robert Burns, but rather like too many things we were given in school, I have a limited tolerance for him and, as with Shakespeare, I regret the uncritical lionisation which seems to accompany them.

Instead, I am going to uncritically lionise one of my own favourite artists, Alasdair Gray, whom, I am delighted to say, is celebrating his 80th phenomenally creative year in literature, art and politics.
