What's New? May 16 Newsletter

Problem: Super talented TX metalsmith needs a small studio of his own.
Solution: You kick in a few bucks to make this happen, get cool thank you gifts in return. He gets his place, you feel good about yourself and your gifts will remind you that your bucks will result in fun, new work.

Images of Creative Communion

For over a year now, I have focused a lot of my energy on working collaboratively with other artists. I am a member of an artists group whose intention is to bring more awareness to art jewellery in Canada, by collaborating with each other and with artists who work in different mediums.  From the time of our first meeting in early 2013, where we just had an idea of working together, interesting, challenging and exciting collaborative projects have continually offered themselves to us.

I love the energy that working with this artists group has brought into my life. In a world that often seems individually focused, it is the collectives, the communions, and the collaborations of which I seek more.

It is my intention to share on this blog images of how creative communion has been flourishing in my life, and how my journey to the “Imagery in Jewelry” workshop will bring me new opportunities for creative communion. [...continue via link...]

As a jewellery artist working in textiles I was struck initially by the title, but it was the video of Jeanne Pruette singing Satin Sheets on That Good Ole Nashville Music in 1973 (wearing a dress whose collar could almost be mistaken as an art jewellery necklace) that drew me to use this song as the inspiration for my piece. The uneasiness of Pruette’s emotionless face throughout the video and her detachment from the lyrics is unsurprising when we learn that the song was written by someone else. Factory worker John Volinkaty wrote this, his first song, in thirty minutes after coming up with the idea while grocery shopping in a Minneapolis supermarket. [...continue via links...]

John D. Mineck Furniture Fellowship - Application Deadline: July 10, 2014

John D. Mineck was a past President of The Society of Arts and Crafts Board of Trustees and a beloved member of Boston's cultural community. The John D. Mineck Foundation was created in 2007 to award charitable and educational gifts that reflected Mineck's interests and values.  His skills as a fine furniture maker were a result of passion, dedication and the guidance of a well-known furniture artist.  Without that guidance, Mineck would not have realized his capabilities.

In an effort to support the art that Mineck loved and the people who make it, the Foundation created a fellowship to encourage and support a "young in career" furniture artist with the financial assistance to help them succeed in their journey.  The fellowship has been designed to help support a talented furniture artist who is: looking to transition to independence, make a significant transition in their career, fulfill an apprenticeship or further develop their skills. The Paradox of Art as Work - NY Times

(Thank you Thomas Skaggs for sending this to the crafthaus editor!)

There are few modern relationships as fraught as the one between art and money. Are they mortal enemies, secret lovers or perfect soul mates? Is the bond between them a source of pride or shame, a marriage of convenience or something tawdrier?

The way we habitually think and talk about these matters betrays a deep and venerable ambivalence. On one hand, art is imagined to exist in a realm of value that lies beyond and beneath mere economic considerations. The old phrase “starving artist” gestures toward an image that is both romantic and pathetic, of a person too pure, and also just too impractical, to make it in the world. When that person ceases to starve, he or she can always be labeled a sellout. You’re not supposed to be in it for the money. [...continue via link...]

“Icons of Formula 1″ and “Over Easy Rider”: First Custom Painted Jewellery

Blog by Poppy Porter on May 14, 2014

New skills are always inspiring, particularly when you know where you want to go with them and just require a bit of practice and experimentation to get there. My last post covered the course with Simon Murray and learning airbrushing and custom painting. Since then I’ve been busy applying my new found knowledge to a few projects.

The first is the Association for Contemporary Jewellery’s exhibition “ICONS: Jewellery for the the Famous and Infamous” up at the National Centre for Craft and Design, Sleaford. The second I’ll cover in another post.

I had two ideas for this exhibition one was successful the other was not but I completed both pieces. [...continue via link...]
