Matthew Cox - Embroidered X-Rays

Matthew Cox is a Philadelphia-based artist who embraces and joins a variety of media to produce several thematic series of work. Every Fall, crafthaus awards a micro project grant to a crafthaus member regardless of location, professional background, or craft field. The grant is unrestricted and intended to provide assistance for a personal or group project. Want to learn a new skill? Have an idea that just needs a little financial help? Wished you could get a craft community related project off the ground?

Past recipients started an international community project with a women's cooperative in Turkey, traveled from Australia to Canada to partake in collaborations across craft media, and learned new techniques that fell outside of their usual scope of work.

What's your project? Get funded!

Entry deadline: September 30, 2014.

The Clark Sisters and More

Posted by The Justified Sinner

Today I headed off to Edinburgh with one aim: to see the show of work by the wonderful Judy Clark and her twin sister, Christine. I've written of Judy before - commissioning a coat from her - and she's borrowed my jewellery to accessorise her Spring collection but I had only ever seen one drawing by her sister before, one which was hanging in the studio when I visited.

Did you ever wonder what the 404 error page looks like on your website?

Test your website!

Type in the URL for your website. ADD some gibberish on the end.

and see what happens..... that is your 404 error page. That is what your customers, clients or collectors see right before they leave your website in frustration. Looks pretty bad doesn't it?

Virginia Joins American Craft Week

The state of Virginia has joined the movement in a big way, with more than 15 events already planned, and many more in the works. Representatives from the Artisans Center of Virginia, ’Round the Mountain, and the Virginia Tourism Corporation are working with the national ACW committee to make Virginia’s premiere memorable.

Crafts abound in Southwest Virginia during American Craft week!” says Diana Blackburn, executive director of `Round the Mountain: Southwest Virginia’s Artisan Network. “From artisan demonstrations, craft sales, craft beer festivals, vineyard tours, wine tasting, cider making, to craft classes and festivals, there is a little something for everyone.”

Posted by John Lunn in Tapestry of Talents: Bringing Your Whole Voice to Your Craft

I've been absent from these pages for the summer while I started a new book and concentrated on getting some flute projects out the door. This month I've actually (gulp) taken a spare bag or two of time to myself and done sweet fork all. What a treat that was. It's been at least a century since I could live a couple of weeks without feeling compelled to do anything.

Well, not nothing... (How can any self respecting obsessive compulsive polymath really do nothing ?) That would be unconscionable. Aside from cleaning the garage, copying 500 VHS movies to a hard drive, retrofitting my workshop so it's ready for some serious work this fall, and so forth, I've been completely idle. Unless you add...oh, never mind. I guess the point is that is really, really hard to do nothing at all when you're wired to be busy all the time. I don't even have a cell phone and I still can't stop whirling like a dust devil.

A couple of thing I discovered while running on empty for a few weeks....

  • Continuing Studies Adult Instructor (Part-Time Temporary) @ Kendall College of Art & Design of Ferris State University - Grand Rapids
  • Lecturer of Art Appreciation @ Georgia Southern University
  • Sabbatical Teaching Replacement, Spring 2015, Furniture Design @ Edinboro University, PA
  • Jewelry and Metalwork Tenure Track Position @ CSU
