2-Day Metals Intensive

Learn about the ancient art of creating unique and detailed bas-relief on sheet metal, known as chasing and repousse. Working on metal sheet, using both pitch and wood, students will be introduced to traditional methods of raising and forming of sheet metal from the back side using smooth faced punches and hammers (repousse) and detailing the front side of the metal with sharper, smaller steel tools (chasing). We will also learn to use Masonite, wood and hydraulic press dies to facilitate the forming process and create multiples. No experience is necessary (though some metals experience is helpful).

NANCY MEGAN CORWIN is a jeweler, metalsmith, teacher, and writer. She received an MFA in Art Metals from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and is an adjunct instructor at Cabrillo and Monterey Peninsula Colleges in California. She has taught at Penland, Pratt Fine Arts Center, Haystack Mountain School of Craft, etc. Her book on the techniques of chasing and repoussé, was recently published by Brynmorgan Press. Megan’s work is included in private collections and in the permanent collections of the Tacoma Art Museum, Washington; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London etc. She is represented in Seattle at Facere Jewelry Art Gallery.
