The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

BAMS ‘NEW MEDALLIST’ SCHEME Part two

 

 

The principal expenses of the artist, which s/he is expected to meet from the £3,000 grant, are:

  • travel to and accommodation in another country for at least three weeks while attending a course or workshop. (The course is arranged and paid for by the scheme, but the responsibility for making the practical arrangements regarding travel and accommodation rests with the artist.)
  • expenses in London for one week while visiting the British Museum and/or Victoria and Albert Museum.
  • living expenses for a further four weeks, including travel to a BAMS conference.
  • travel to mentoring sessions with a UK-based medal-maker.
  • production of at least one medal.

 

Moreover, the artist will be expected to retain his/her membership of BAMS (currently £35 per annum) for a further three years after the conclusion of the twelve-month period, thereby maintaining close involvement with the medal world.

 

Applications from artists wishing to be considered for the scheme should consist of:

  • a letter explaining why the artist is interested in the scheme and what s/he hopes to get out of it.
  • an idea for a medal that s/he would like to make. (This should indicate an ability to think in terms of medallic art and may include sketches and text concerning the ideas behind the medal.)
  • a curriculum vitae.
  • the name, position and contact details of a referee who may be contacted by BAMS.
  • printed images (not transparencies or a disk) of six works by the artist.

 

Applications should be received by the 31 May 2012. They should be sent by post or delivered by hand. E-mail applications are not accepted. A decision will be made in June.  All applicants will be informed of the outcome.  The scheme will run from September 2012 through to August 2013.

Total professional valuations solutions

We are continually developing our valuations service and we would like to tell you about the Valuation Days we can run in your store. Your customers can have their jewellery, gemstones, watches and silverware appraised by our experienced valuer. This is important for insurance purposes, especially as the price of precious metals continues to rise.

If you already have your own valuer we can still help by offering cover for them whilst they are away. We are confident we can work with you. But don’t just take our word for it. V&A Exhibition - Fit for Purpose: Contemporary British Silversmiths

Contemporary British Silversmiths is delighted to announce it has been invited by the Victoria & Albert museum to create an exhibition as part of its British Design Season and to complement its major exhibition British Design 1948-2012: Innovation in the Modern Age.

For this display Contemporary British Silversmiths brought together the work of 52 of its members. It takes an imaginative look at the theme Fit for Purpose, exploring the function of each object both practically and conceptually. The work on show demonstrates that silver, with its unique working and practical properties, is as relevant today as it has ever been. Each piece features a UK hallmark, along with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee commemorative hallmark, making these objects historically significant and collectable.

This free event runs until 16 September at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The exhibition is also generously supported by the Goldsmiths’ Company.

Making brooches for the Queen

Fine jewellery designer and goldsmith Kristjan Eyjolfssonhas now begun using the Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office for hallmarking. We are particularly excited about this as Kristjan is producing some very intricate flower pins on behalf of the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), as well as a very special brooch which will be given to the Queen as a gift to mark her Diamond Jubilee. Kristjan is an ethical goldsmith and as a commitment to the use of recycled metals, Kristjan Eyjolfsson Fine Jewellery have registered specially-designed marks with us to stamp pieces made of recycled silver, gold and platinum. This is in order to promote pride in the use of recycled metals and also spread the use of these materials where possible.

The RHS pins are all lasered with the Recycled Silver mark, the Queen’s Jubilee mark and the the Goldsmiths' Company Assay Office standard marks comprising of Kristjan's sponsor’s mark, traditional fineness mark, millesimal fineness mark, Assay Office mark and date letter mark.

2012 sees the show return to a temporary hard sided pavilion. This year, for the first time, the fair will be situated in the main public square: a vibrant area, surrounded by trendy bars, street cafes and the commercial offices of some of the UK’s leading financial and legal companies.

 Artists International Development Fund - Call for Applications

The Artists’ international development programme is a £750,000 fund, jointly funded by the British Council and Arts Council England.

The programme offers early stage development opportunities for individual freelance and self employed artists based in England to spend time building links with artists, organisations and/or creative producers in another country. 

We have developed the Artists’ international development fund to help us achieve our aims within goal 1 of our 10-year framework Achieving great art for everyone: talent and artistic excellence are thriving and celebrated. We want artists to be open to international perspectives and to expand their horizons. You can find out more about this in the Arts Council Plan 2011-15.

The British Council and the Arts Council want the programme to produce:

• a cadre of artists and creative practitioners in the UK (and also globally) who have experienced the benefits of international working between the UK and other countries and are advocates for it among their peers

• an increase in the amount of international collaboration among artists between the UK and other countries across the arts and creative industries

• artistic development for artists

Artists are able to apply for small grants (minimum of £1,000 up to £5,000). You can only apply to the Artists’ international development programme once in any financial year.

 May is Craft and Design Month

Hundreds of craft events already take place successfully every year during the month of May; now Craft and Design Month can bring them all together under one banner to collectively target national and regional media. There are also lots of opportunities for people to organise something especially for Craft and Design Month.

The overall aim is to achieve wider publicity and public awareness of the fine craft and design that exists in the UK today.

This project receives no funding or grant aid. It is entirely based on the simple concept of people working together for the benefit of the whole creative community and is sponsored by craft&design magazine, who have launched this unique opportunity to celebrate and promote crafts across the UK.
