Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

 AXISWEB SECURES £100,000:
 Funding from Innovate UK
We’re delighted to announce that Axisweb has been successful in securing almost £100,000 from Innovate UK to support a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) with Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU).

The funding enables Axisweb to build on our research Validation beyond the gallery and recent projects such as those with Heart of Glass and Mozilla Foundation.  Under the guidance of Dr Amanda Ravetz and Dr David Woollard at MMU, the action research project will explore and test models of validation for socially engaged practice that will champion the role of the artist and their value in society, enhance engagement and underpin the transformation of Axisweb into a sustainable, self-financing charity.

Form Function & Food

Form Function & Food was conceived in response to Northern Ireland’s Year of Food and Drink 2016. Selected works by artists and makers producing functional or abstract pieces relate to food and dining and include furniture, fine art, silverware, ceramics, textiles and bread.

The thirteen participants (a baker’s dozen) were selected from open call and bring an international line up to Lisburn. Local NI makers sit alongside works from across the UK, and from as far afield as Finland and Australia. Uniting skill and concept, the works highlight the dining table as a focus for human interaction.

Welcome to the third Crafts Book Club. This time we welcome curator and writer, Glenn Adamson to talk about his new book, Art in the Making: Artists and their Materials from the Studio to Crowdsourcing co-authored with Julia Bryan-Wilson and recently published by Thames & Hudson. We’re delighted to hosting this edition at the Clerkenwell showroom of Carl Hansen & Søn; a leading company of the Danish modern movement, known for its dedication to craftsmanship.

Art in the Making takes you behind the scenes of the studio, the factory, and other sites where art is created. It demonstrates how the materials and processes used are vital to understanding the economic and social contexts from which art emerges.

Glenn Adamson is the co-founder of the Journal of Modern Craft, author of The Craft Reader and The Invention of Craft, and regular contributor to Crafts. He was formerly director of the Museum of Arts and Design, New York, head of research at the Victoria and Albert Museum and tutor at the Royal College of Art, London.

Doors open at 6.30pm and the discussion will start at 7pm, lasting around an hour.

Wanted: Artists Interested in Emergency Response

Artists are important contributors to community recovery after significant disasters. They provide relief to those impacted through their creativity and they help communities face their losses and move toward rebuilding. Creative Relief, which has just been launched by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge is a great example of this, and they are already helping those affected by the recent floods in Louisiana.

CERF+ believes the role that artists serve in community recovery is increasingly important so we've teamed up with the American Red Cross to offer a training for community-based artists in the disaster response process. If you are an artist (in any discipline) whose work is community-based, we invite you to this free training on Sept. 7 at the Vermont Arts Council in Montpelier, VT. Only two seats are remaining.

Training sessions will be conducted by: Jono Anzalone, Division Disaster Executive, and Marlys DeVries, Division Disaster Director, North Central Division.
