Wellcome Image Awards 2014

The winners of the 13th Wellcome Image Awards were recently announced. The 18 winning images, created by scientists, photographers and artists from around the world, give an up-close-and-personal view of humans, animals, plants and the environment.

The images are on display in the Wellcome Trust windows, next door to Wellcome Collection on Euston Road in London, and at Wellcome Image Awards exhibitions at Glasgow Science Centre, MOSI in Manchester, Techniquest in Cardiff and W5 in Belfast. You can see the images, and find out about them and the people who created them, on the Wellcome Image Awards website.

Craft Finder
We are sad to announce that at the end of May Craft Finder will be closing its doors. Although we are really proud of what we have achieved and how far we have come since launching in May 2012, the venture is unable to become financially sustainable in the time we have. We've thought long and hard and talked with others but we've not been able to come up with a solution.

This difficult decision has been made with the knowledge and satisfaction that the past two years have been spent promoting some of the most exciting contemporary craft makers in the UK today.

Until the end of May, you can continue to use our search. And our list of 2014's top craft events might inspire you as you think about your summer and autumn breaks. If you're visiting Yorkshire you might like to read about our craft lover's routes, designed with the Tour de France in mind.

Thank you for reading and for being such a wonderful audience.

With best wishes,
Happy craft finding,
Janet, Lucia and Catherine

Each day, there will be demos and talks from expert artists and craftspeople. Come and hear from one of West Dean’s master weavers about recreating a medieval tapestry, see how to create a floral masterpiece or learn the story behind the Pyke Clock – said to have been owned by Marie Antoinette and currently being conserved at West Dean College. All talks and demos are FREE!

Early bird tickets are £7.50 (book before 12 June) and include free access to our award-winning gardens, all for less than the standard entry price to the gardens.

Inspired by the glacial landscapes, strata and hues during a charity trek to Everest Base Camp, Spirit Collection features bold, sculptural statement pieces. A collaboration with PDR at Cardiff Metropolitan University, the pieces are virtually carved out of clay with haptic arm technology and 3D printed before being finished by hand.
.

Wedi ei ysbrydoli gan y tirweddau, y strata a’r arlliwiau rhewlifol yn ystod taith gerdded elusennol i Wersyll Cyntaf Everest, mae casgliad Spirit yn cynnwys darnau cerfluniol beiddgar a thrawiadol. Caiff y darnau, sy’n ffrwyth cydweithio â PDR ym Mhrifysgol Metropolitan Caerdydd, eu cerfio’n rhithiol allan o glai trwy ddefnyddio technoleg braich gyffyrddiadol a’u hargraffu’n 3D cyn cael eu caboli â llaw.

Beth Legg
The remote environment Beth comes from in the far north coast of Scotland has always strongly influenced her work. Fascinated by the hinterlands and quiet edges of places, her jewellery reflects on the often bleak and fragile nature of this environment. She works instinctively with the materials rather than contriving designs beforehand. “I like to think of the body as a landscape - the jewellery pieces are transformed when worn and the wearer appropriates the narrative of the landscape and forms their own associations through the piece.”
.

Mae’r ardal anghysbell y daw Beth ohoni, ar unigeddau pell arfordir gogledd Yr Alban, wastad wedi dylanwadau’n sylweddol ar ei gwaith. Gan fod perfeddwlad a chyrion tawel amrywiol ardaloedd yn ei rhyfeddu, mae ei gemwaith yn myfyrio ar natur fregus a digon anial yr amgylcheddau hyn. Bydd yn gweithio’n reddfol â’r deunyddiau’n hytrach na dyfeisio cynlluniau ymlaen llaw. “Rwy’n hoffi ystyried y corff fel tirwedd – caiff y darnau o emwaith eu trawsnewid o’u gwisgo a bydd y person sy’n eu gwisgo’n mabwysiadu naratif y tirwedd gan lunio eu cysylltiadau eu hunain trwy’r gwaith.”
.

Craft Showcase / Arddangosfa Crefft
Alison Graham
Alison’s work is inspired by the transient nature of colours and surfaces in the landscape, specifically the Lake District in northern England where she grew up, and the Gower Peninsula in South Wales where she regularly goes surfing. She creates sensations of depth and movement by hand-painting glazes onto porcelain forms. Interactions between the colours of both clays and glazes are explored, experimenting with hue, luminosity, translucency and transparency of the surface, to create visual effects that appear ambiguous or nebulous.

Caiff gwaith Alison ei ysbrydoli gan natur byrhoedlog lliwiau ac arwynebau yn y tirwedd, yn enwedig ardal y llynnoedd yng ngogledd Lloegr ble y’i maged, a Phenrhyn Gŵyr yn Ne Cymru, ble y bydd yn mynd i syrffio’n aml. Bydd yn creu ymdeimlad o ddyfnder a symudiad trwy baentio gwydredd â llaw ar wrthrychau porslen. Bydd yn archwilio’r rhyngweithiadau rhwng lliwiau’r clai yn ogystal â’r gwydredd, gan arbrofi ag arlliwiau, disgleirdeb, tryleuder a thryloywedd yr arwyneb, er mwyn creu effeithiau gweledol sy’n ymddangos yn amwys neu’n aneglur.
