Centrepunch Announce Ground-Breaking Bursary scheme

An innovative new scheme has been announced by Centrepunch, the Lambeth based training and support centre aimed squarely at helping graduates launch their budding careers.

Continuing their mission to help recently graduated makers establish themselves in the hyper competitive world of Goldsmithing, Centrepunch, spearheaded by their inspirational Director of Education Beaulagh Brooks, are calling for applicants to fill 10 Bursary places that will provide a comprehensive package of support throughout 2014 and beyond. Open to graduates from 2012 and 2013.

"We have drawn upon our team's vast experience and knowledge of what fledgling businesses need to put together a wish-list support package, the highlight of which will be free business hours access to our workshops for a year, acknowledged as the best in London for quality of space and facilities", says Beaulagh.

Centrepunch is teaming up with influential industry players to provide invaluable opportunities for the successful applicants including free business training seminars, access to training courses and exhibitions to name just some of the features.

"We are determined to fill a vacuum in genuine support for graduates in the Goldsmithing industry and we are very proud to have been asked by Lambeth Council to become a partner in providing training and mentoring to businesses in the Borough and surrounding areas. In doing so we are encouraging new business growth and enterprise to West Norwood whilst providing much needed support to new designer makers," Brooks says.

Dear All,
 
At Ardington we’re gearing up for our new season, which starts next month.  Work is underway in the garden, to create an outdoor studio for the summer months. We will hold willow, flower arranging and watercolour courses under the shade of a lovely wooden pergola.
 
This year we’re offering almost 200 courses – just to make choosing particularly tricky! These include everything from jewellery cast in colourful resin and making paper from textiles, to upholstery and printmaking.
 
Our team of leading tutors just keeps growing. New-comers for 2014 include award-winning paper engineer and pop-up book artist Paul Johnson; Dave Venables, past-president of the British Origami Society; and acclaimed experimental paper-maker Jonathan Korejko. And that’s just in the paper people….

I have a few (very few!) spaces for our private views on Wednesday 19th March and Thursday 20th March, so if you're still thinking about applying for tickets, now is your chance. This winter has seen the opening of the spectacular exhibition of Tudor and Stuart jewellery which forms the Cheapside Hoard. Curated by Hazel Forsyth, this exhibition throws a spotlight on the activities and work of the London goldsmiths of this period. It also draws on detailed archive research by Hazel which reveals the extensive trading patterns which brought some of these jewels to London.

By courtesy of the Museum of London, members of ACJ are invited to attend a private view of the Cheapside Hoard exhibition on either Wednesday 19th March, or Thursday 20th March, 2014, at 9.15 for 9.30 am. It will be an excellent opportunity for members to hear about the Hoard at first hand from Hazel, who will give members a brief introduction. Members will be able to stay on afterwards during the public opening time for as long as they like. Everyone is asked to arrive by 9.15, at the latest, to deposit coats and bags.

Please note: The Museum has a strict cloakroom policy, and no coats or bags will be allowed into the exhibition. There are lockers for all luggage.

Tickets are £12.00 per member. Members may bring a non-member guest at a cost of £15, if applications allow. Numbers are limited to 20 per visit.

HOLD IT! The Art of the Modern Medal

The Student Medal Project, now in its 21^st year, is a success story for bringing the art of the modern medal into the art college curriculum, whether in sculpture, metal work or jewellery. It is an introduction to the age-old art of bronze casting, where students themselves each create a small but powerful work of two-sided relief sculpture, which can be held in the hand.

 

This exhibition takes us from the political to the personal, the abstract to the mainstream, as the students – and some professional makers – express their creativity and craftsmanship in the surprising medium of the modern art medal.

 

The British Art Medal Society, which is behind this Project, is based at the British Museum. It also commissions medals every year for sale to its members, arranges lectures and conferences. At the British Museum can be found the country’s wide-ranging collection of modern art medals, including student medals it has purchased. Each year colleges around the UK are invited to participate, plus an academy from abroad, this year, the University of Sofia, Bulgaria. The culmination of the Project is the annual exhibition, which in 2014 will be held at the New Ashgate Gallery in Farnham, Surrey.

Prize-winners from the 2012 British Art Medal Society Student Medal Project

 

1.  Are you who you say you are?, 2012,  Bo Behan, University for the Creative Arts, Farnham (bronze on copper plate, 8mm x 8mm)

This prize-winning medal tackles the questions surrounding social media, where anonymity gives protection to the one who sends out falsehoods, but causes others to build their beliefs on an identity that may be non-existent.  However, the medal also champions this networking site, as it can be used by those who are repressed to support their causes. 

 

 

  

 

 

2.  Fleeting Moment, 2013, Alice Ellis-Bray, Falmouth University (cast bronze, 9.5mm diam.)

The artist won a prize for this medal, which captures a personal moment, when a butterfly came to rest against her cheek.  The butterfly and the chrysalis are used metaphorically, to suggest change may come, and patience and time are required for any form of transformation.  We learn from mistakes and overcoming obstacles.

 

 

 

 

 

The New Ashgate Gallery is a destination for viewing and buying the best of affordable contemporary art and craft by established and emerging artists and makers. New Ashgate is dedicated to promote and champion the best contemporary art and craft in the market place and to provide an unparalleled resource in Farnham, Surrey and beyond. The Gallery curates an exciting programme of changing exhibitions and has an affordable gift shop. As a not-for-profit charity, it also fosters emerging artists and makers through mentoring and touring exhibitions, working in partnership with organisations such as the University for the Creative Arts and the Crafts Council.

http://origin.library.constantcontact.com/download/get/file/1107521...  We are seeking up to about 20 exhibitors from all areas of craft/art that, as well as having their work displayed for sale, can offer an interesting and informative demonstration, and in particular, those who are to able run small workshops for the visitors.   Workshops may be short, drop in and go, perhaps contributing to a collective work (this is an area both RHS and Craft In Focus are keen to stage), or structured and more formal with a finished piece to take away.   It is difficult to state an exact cost to participate, as some demonstrations/workshops will be more involved than others. However as a guide, for a very simple demonstration using a 3m x 3m marquee supplied by us, the cost would be no more than £350, whereas for a larger workshop based exhibit the full cost could be minimal. Electricity and tables will be included in the overall cost and will all be exempt from VAT.   If there are high material costs involved, the RHS have indicated they may make available an allowance towards this, but in return they will keep any charge made for each participant. Structured workshops, for instance a batik workshop, would be available to book in advance via the RHS, so it is important that capacity of workshop is stated, and how many workshops per day.
