We have transformed our Forest Office into a simple but brilliant Forest Studio, to be used by artists working in any art form. If you want to explore King’s Wood and be inspired, test a new idea or way of working, or just get some distance of the day-to-day routine of the studio, this could be for you.

Smiths Row is running a series of professional development days for makers. 

The sessions are designed for those with 5+ years experience but would also be suitable for those with 2+ years experience. 

We are also happy to consider applications from artists as well as makers.

The first session will be on 17 February - and will focus on business development - we still have places available for this session - please call us directly and ask to speak to Lisa King to register interest.

The following sessions will look at writing about your work for the press and working on commissioned projects.

Full details of all three sessions is attached along with an application form to apply for a place on the 2nd and 3rd sessions.

Goldsmiths’ Fair '14 Application Deadline Fast Approaching!

The application deadline to return your Goldsmiths’ Fair 2014 application is now less than a month away.

If you haven't already received your Goldsmiths' Fair application pack please check the eligibility requirements below, then email your name and postal address to: joanne.dodd@thegoldsmiths.co.uk

Remember to return your completed applications to Goldsmiths’ Hall by 5pm, Friday 28th February 2014, either by hand or by post (no applications will be accepted by email).

Eligibility

Jewellers and silversmiths can apply to be in the Fair if they are all of the following:

Applying with work where each piece includes precious metal(s)
UK resident
Employing six people or less at the bench
Applying with work that has been designed and made in the UK by the applicants themselves
If the applicant has used the specialist techniques of another tradesman these should be noted
Not in full time education at the time of application
Able to attend their stand at all times during their allocated week at the Fair
Compliant with the UK Hallmarking Act 1973
We’re re-committing to making Goldsmiths’ Fair a showcase for new work. Of course there’s room for existing work, however we urge returning exhibitors to feature their latest work in their applications, and if they are selected, on their stands.


Graduate Bursary Scheme

Once again we will be offering ten free graduate stands with bursaries. To be eligible for a graduate stand, you must be all of the following:

• 30 years or under on 30th September 2014
• Have graduated (from an HND/BA/MA or Goldsmiths’ Apprenticeship) during or after 2009

• Have not exhibited at the Fair before



Unless requested otherwise, we will automatically add your details to the Goldsmiths’ Company mailing list, or if you are already listed, the details you provide will overwrite any previous information we may have.

Birthday Celebrations

We will be one year old! You only turn one once, so we will be celebrating in style!
Join us for some compulsory 99' ice cream and watch the magic unfold when making ice cream with liquid nitrogen. We will have some traditional party games such as Pass-the-Parcel, but be prepared to be surprised, they will all be material inspired!
From the science of making and throwing that perfect paper aeroplane, to suspending helium balloons in mid air.
Finally there always has to be a party gift to take home, the first 300 people you will receive a surprise material inspired party gift, who knows what you will receive!

We will be launching a very special present for all you material lovers, our Materials Library app (which will be available to download via iTunes). On the day we will have an iPad on hand to help guide you through the library to explore the wondrous materials we have. Search for the best wax to make the perfect Birthday candle, one that doesn't drip on your birthday cake, smell to strongly, can be coloured easily and has a good flame which can be blown out!

Call for Applications - a-n bursary programme
In 2013, a-n launched what proved to be a timely portfolio of professional development bursaries, offered exclusively to artist members. Designed to be as light touch as possible, this scheme has already received 258 applications seeking nearly £165,000 of funding, perhaps identifying a level of genuine need currently not being met by existing artists’ support schemes. Deadlines and details of bursaries:

Specifically for artists working collectively and through artists’ initiatives. The bursaries enable artists to visit other initiatives, to improve communication and knowledge exchange, and foster joint developments.
New Collaborations
Deadline for applications: Tuesday 18 March 2014
Supporting artists’ critical and artistic development through buying time to research into new collaborations.

maker Wesley-Barrell pride themselves on being one of the few British companies in existence who both trains and utilises traditional craftspeople. The fourth Craft Awards, which highlight the importance of craftsmanship in the making of Wesley-Barrell’s own upholstery collection, aims to continue to increase awareness of crafts and promote craft to a wider public.
Who should enter?
The Wesley-Barrell Craft Awards invites established craft makers who are currently working professionally in the Britain in two categories;
• Furniture (Owing to space constraints entries in the furniture category should be no more than 120 x 120 x 180 cms)
• Vessels for Interiors
Why enter?
Winners from each category will be announced in June 2014 at a makers reception, whilst short-listed work is showcased at Wesley-Barrell’s flagship showroom in London, W1. Short-listed work will then travel to Art in Action – a festival of fine art and master craftsmanship held 17 – 20 July 2014 at Waterperry House, Oxfordshire.
As well as a cash prize of £2,500 the two winners will also benefit from a business mentoring scheme with Wesley-Barrell which will give them access to professionals from every department including marketing, sales, accounts and IT.
Winners and short-listed makers will benefit from the supporting national and regional promotional campaign.
Judging criteria:
Judges will be looking to recognise the use of traditional techniques to create ‘one- off’ handcrafted pieces designed for domestic or commercial interiors, in particular the use of traditional skills in an innovative and contemporary way.
Winning a Wesley-Barrell Craft Award will bring recognition to your skills. The judging panel is made up of respected names in the world of craft and design including Jon Snow – journalist and Channel 4 News anchorman, Henrietta Thompson – Design writer, author and curator, Rod Wales – Furniture designer, maker and co-founder of Wales & Wales, Helen Chislett – Journalist and author and Juliette Barrell – Wesley-Barrell Director.
Application process and timings:
Entries need to be submitted by Friday 28 February 2014.
March 2014: Entries will be judged by the panel to produce a final shortlist of around12 makers.
June/July 2014 - Short listed work will be exhibited as part of a touring exhibition.

Opportunities E-Newsletter 5 February 2014

Review of 2013

Welcome to 2014, belatedly. For me the New Year starts properly after the Chinese New Year celebrations which were held in Chinatown and Trafalgar Square and finished with spectacular fireworks. 2014 is the year of the Horse, a year full of galloping energy and change.

For Hidden Art, 2013 has been a busy year full of exciting events. We moved offices to Stamford Hill last October. Although our new office is considerably smaller, we instantly fell in love with it due to is cosiness and the fact that it came fully equipped with its own cooker, oven and shower! We’ve already put the oven to good use to prepare a delicious turkey for Christmas. The shower, however, has only served to drain our drenched umbrellas…so far.

We made a calendar with pictures of events from the previous year from Open Studios, to Milan and the move to our new premises. We liked the pictures so much that we put them in a blog post for you to see. Look closely as some of you may spot yourselves in those pictures! Hidden Art in 2013

July saw the launch of our own e-shop. After being kindly hosted at Culturelabel since early 2012 we managed to bring www.hiddenartshop.co.uk back to life again. That was perhaps the proudest moment of 2013.

We also ran a range of 1-2-1 sessions on a wide variety of topics, including product development, marketing and 3D Printing. For more details read the reports below
