Festival of Crafts 2014 - Call for applicatons

Our next festival of crafts will take place on Sat 18 & Sun 19 October 2014.

festival of crafts is now in its eighteenth year and 2014 promises to be the best yet, with a curated marketplace, DIY workshops, and activities across the town.

We are looking for applications from makers working in a variety of disciplines, including new and traditional craft techniques, producing work with a modern design aesthetic. festival of crafts is a weekend long celebration of all things handmade; championing great design and the process of making. The marketplace will showcase over 70 designer makers and products with a lifestyle focus, including (but not limited to): homewares, jewellery, ceramics, stationery, accessories, up-cycling, furniture, lighting, textiles and print.

The show offers opportunities to well established craft practitioners as well as first time exhibitors and graduates (special graduate rates available). As we receive more applications than we can accept the selection process aims to offer visitors an eclectic mix of contemporary craft from innovative makers. Please take a look at the selection criteria below for more details.

This year we will be offering several awards to exhibitors including the New Ashgate Gallery Award, where the winner will feature as a Maker in Focus at the gallery.

festival of crafts is a curated show, stands are not selected on a first come first serve basis. Selection is made by a panel who take into consideration the following:
·         How your items fit in with our ethos of festival of crafts which is a showcase for contemporary lifestyle craft with a modern design aesthetic
·         Items must be designed or made by the exhibitor
·         How your items are represented in your supplied photos/website
·         If the range of work falls into more than one category, then the organiser reserves the right to specify that only one part of the range is eligible for display
·         If a joint application, the cohesive nature of the work and why it should be a shared stand, individual makers from joint applications will not be selected separately
·         If a returning exhibitor, what new items you intend to show since participating in or applying to past festivals, so we can keep the festival fresh and engaging for our returning audience
·         How your work fits in with the range of disciplines available at festival of crafts

I have attached an application form in case you would like to apply for a stand. Please do get in touch if you have any questions.

Many Thanks,

Scenari di Innovazione" 10° edition

International Competition for design of products or collections for Tuscan - Italian - artistic craftsmanship and industry

Atavism & Technology

Deadline March 21, 2014

DOWNLOAD information : http://www.artex.firenze.it/en/categoria/design-and-innovation/scen...

In today’s contemporary society, projects with character and essence have a greater marketing strength with audiences. Craftsmanship in Tuscany automatically presents these traits and that of atavism through the use of traditional materials, techniques and the resultant creative products; all pertaining to the identity and historical heritage of the region. The rich attributes in question; from stories, design strategies and materials to the unique mark left by the hand of the maker provides significant sustenance to the internet community; inspiring blogs, online articles and other social media which in turn serves to raise the profile of craftsmanship alongside broadening the reach of it’s market.

The impact of technological developments on the production of craft in addition to business management is substantial and fundamental in ensuring continued success and growth within the industry.

Technology now firmly on the market following experimentation such as advanced 2D/ 3D printing and laser cutting is allowing companies the opportunity for efficient and fast development of products. In the virtual world, e-commerce and initiatives such as crowd funding in addition to free marketing afforded by social media are providing extensive and extraordinary opportunities for the typical craft business.

The 18 – 35 young age range of applicants to Scenari di Innovazione reflects the most digitally active section of the population and are potentially the best placed to naturally take advantage of all that the Internet has to offer, vitally contributing to the competiveness of this sector. The breadth of the theme demonstrated in the image on this year’s competition literature necessitates equal consideration of both Atavism and Technology; the past in its enormity side by side with contemporary propulsion. Through the role of design, applicants are encouraged to interpret the theme creatively to design new and original products by merging new technologies with handicraft production that furthermore acknowledges the genius loci, artistic handicraft and design associated with Tuscany.

In addition to this theme applicants must select a company and choose one of the briefs presented. When designing their product or collections they must also consider the production guidelines, corporate philosophies and material requirements provided by the ten Tuscan small and medium craft enterprises (SMEs).

The companies involved:

Baldi - furnishings; Casone Packaging - objects and cardboard; Flowerssori - accessories and children items; Garfagnana Innovation - marble and stone; Group Sofa - furnishings; Integra - textiles; laboratory items - ceramics and other materials; Martinelli Joinery - wooden modular systems; Pedri - lighting; Wooclass - faccessories in wood Fashion.

aster classes in haptic 3D digital modelling, Edinburgh in January, Great Chrissie pressie to give/receive!

"Series of 4 short taster classes in January to try haptic 3D digital modelling. Great way to start the New Year and an ideal opportunity to try remarkable award winning* Anarkik 3D Design package and use a haptic device. Each class is £30 (includes VAT) and 3 hours long, sufficiently long enough to get used to the sensation of virtual 3D touch (haptics) and to grasp why Anarkik 3D Design is a more intuitive and familiar way of working in 3D. The class will suit all levels of expertise and although a serious tool developed by designer makers for designer makers, it is fun to design and model with. And a class is a great Christmas present to give to someone. It is quick and easy to learn and use and Anarkik3D has 4 short taster classes, taken by Ann Marie Shillito**, in January 2014 on different days at different times: 9th Jan (Thursday): 2 to 5 pm (2 places left) 11th Jan (Saturday): 10am to 1pm (4 places) 17th Jan (Friday): 2 to 5 pm (2 places left) 21st Jan (Tuesday): 10am to 1pm (4 places) Venue: Anarkik3D’s office: 7 Mentone Terrace, Edinburgh EH9 2DG Contact: thinks@anarkik3d.co.uk For more information: http://www.anarkik3d.co.uk/ * winner of 'best consumer software' at the 3DPrintShow2013 Global Awards. **Author of 'Digital Crafts:Industrial Technologies for Applied Artists and Designer Makers', published last October by Bloomsbury."
