PRESS RELEASE 20 December 2013

Exhibition Announcement and Call for Your Readers Help and Participation

The Farnham based Jewellers and Silversmiths Network (JSN) have challenged themselves to design, make and exhibit a collection of works in response to the theme of:

“Message: Beyond Adornment”

The members of the JSN will be exploring creative boundaries and interpreting the theme in its broadest sense developing ideas including those surrounding the environmental, philosophical, social and personal in a variety of media.

The exhibition will run from 27th April 2014 – 7th June 2014 at The New Ashgate Gallery, Waggon Yard, Farnham, Surrey GU9 7PS

THE JSN NEEDS YOU AND YOUR READERS TO PARTICIPATE

One of the displays will be a collection of work sent in by anyone who would like to join in be they professional, or amateur, young or old. It will look at how we can try to take control of images of ourselves, a topical theme given the prevalence of social media sites and the speed with which our image can be spread across the internet

JSN Member Poppy Porter says; “ we are keen to involve as wide an audience as possible with this exhibition and engage with people beyond a passive viewing experience. Get involved make a necklace.”

THE BRIEF: Design and make a piece of revisable neckwear that says “I Agree” on one side and “I Disagree” on the other. This allows the wearer to physically attempt to send a message about whether they want their photo taken or not. “I Agree” and “I Disagree” is the terminology commonly used in computer software user agreements. You can use any materials you like in any style. There is only one proviso – it is a swap, you will not get your own necklace back but you will get someone else’s. Do not use precious materials unless you are willing to give them away – if you make a necklace out of diamonds be aware you may get one back made out of wool.

Submissions must be received by March 24th 2014

Send to Rebecca Skeels, University for the Creative Arts, Falkner Road, Farnham, Surrey, GU9 7DS

Including an SAE with postage to cover the return of a necklace.

NOTES TO EDITOR:

· "The Jewellers and Silversmiths Network is a group run by and for its members with the aim of strengthening links with other makers in the local area around Farnham, Surrey. We meet regularly at the Maltings, Farnham to exchange useful information and explore new skills. We also exhibit together as a group, presenting our work to as wide a range of people as possible. As members of the group, we are able to take advantage of, and create, collaborative opportunities that would not be available to us as individuals."

· The New Ashgate Gallery Trust is dedicated to promote and champion the best contemporary art and craft and to provide an unparalleled resource in Farnham, Surrey. www.newashgate.org.uk

Dazzle has made a short move down the South Bank into the iconic Oxo Tower Wharf, transforming into Dazzle@oxo…

Up until this year Dazzle, the UK’s largest selling contemporary jewellery exhibition, has called the National Theatre their London home. In 2013 they are showcasing over 50 jewellery designers from 22 countries and selling 3000 unique handmade pieces right here in our gallery@oxo.

Along with established jewellery designers such as Gail Klevan and Jane Adam and our very own Josef Koppmann, Dazzle are introducing 12 new young designers. Graduate Kelly Munro brings her wonderful statement pieces, made from branded wood, knotted rubber and intricately saw pierced metal, each inspired by the north Scottish coastline.. While fellow emerging designer, Chris Boland, is bringing his strong bold designs using semi-precious stones.

For 32 years, Dazzle has provided a much anticipated insight into all that is happening in contemporary jewellery. The showcase is a place to find both internationally collected names and discover new talent, hand picked from graduate shows by the Dazzle team. Don’t miss out on viewing (and buying) these wearable works of art on display in the gallery@oxo throughout the festive season.

WEEKLY NEWS

Hi Rebecca

We have another WebCast this Saturday 14th December at 14:30 GMT. This month we are looking at and demonstrating Delft Clay Casting. Again we will be casting live on air so anything could happen. We will be giving away some goodies again, Mugs and Aprons and hopefully they will arrive in time for the Holiday season. To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is Share, Like and Tweet the WebCast from the Livestream web page Click Here new.livestream.com/AtTheBench. We are going to try and get Andrew and Jason dressed up in their Christmas jumpers too, so watch out!

Thanks for all your suggestions over the past week on videos for Andrew to film. It's always good to hear what members want when it comes to films to watch, so if you havent got your suggestion in yet, just drop us a line. Perhaps it is a particular tool that you want Andrew to demonstrate. Have you asked Santa for an item of equipment that you would like a little help on how to get the most from it? How about techniques? There are still plenty of techniques that Andrew has not covered as yet so if you want some help, just ask.

Just drop us an email and let us know Click here

Have a great weekend.

Call for Entries - ACJ Members' Exhibition 2014 - ICONS

ICONS - jewellery for the famous and infamous, pieces reflecting cultural & design icons
This will allow people to use such design icons as the mini, anglepoise lamp or other iconic objects as inspiration, or design a piece for a movie star, rock star or similar. It is a theme which could be interpreted in many ways, and we encourage you to think around the subject.

1.    The work must be in some way tied to the theme.
2.    You may submit one proposal with up to three related pieces.
3.    The pieces MUST be wearable in some fashion to adorn the body; we encourage you to explore the full definitions of "wearable", and further explore and push those boundaries.
4.    The use of precious metals is not mandatory, you may use a wide range of materials
5.    A high quality of design and making are essential for selection. The Panel will be considering pieces for a major exposition of what contemporary jewellery is in 2014.

We will publish a catalogue of the exhibition, and will advertise on our website, other web channels and some press. NCCD will also publicise this exhibition in their brochure and other channels

Cost
The submission fee is £15 for up to three pieces proposed. You will pay for delivery of the work. All other costs for the show are covered. However, if ACJ is successful in securing further venues there may be a fee payable to contribute to transport, insurance and mounting costs. This would not exceed £50 in total and will hopefully be less.
Participation in touring will be optional (but we hope to tour as many pieces as possible)
