The CONTEMPORARY JEWELLERY YEARBOOK 2011 is the new bilingual (Spanish/English) publishing project aimed at promoting and disseminating contemporary jewellery all over the world. Almost 150 artists from 26 countries are participating in this international community, and together they entail a merger of the most diverse creative languages. They are artists working in design, experimentation, emotions, art... all in the corporal sphere, who contribute their interests, their reflections and their way of viewing jewellery to this annual catalogue. The first print yearbook of contemporary jewellery is indeed a collective, shared challenge that aims to become a worldwide referent thanks to its content in international creative inquiry into jewellery, which has never before been compiled.

Jeremy Hunt Visits UCA’s Crafts Study Centre

The Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport

visited the Crafts Study Centre at the University for the Creative

Arts (UCA) on Friday 28 October.

 

Jeremy Hunt, who is also MP for South West Surrey, learned

about the Centre’s role in preserving Britain’s craft heritage during

a tour of its archives. He was also shown around the Centre’s

collections alongside internationally renowned furniture-maker

Fred Baier who is currently exhibiting there.

 

Jeremy Hunt said: “I think the Crafts Study Centre at

UCA is very important nationally for its research into a

part of our heritage which is often overlooked.

 

“Farnham has a great tradition of craft and it’s great to

see that continue here. It excites me that the Crafts

Study Centre lets you explore the history of craft

combined with work by contemporary artists like Fred

Baier who is exhibiting here today.”

 

“I hope it will inspire future generations of artists at

UCA, and beyond, to realise they can make a career

from crafts and design.”

 

The Crafts Study Centre is a museum of modern crafts

established as a registered charity in 1970. The Chair of the Centre is the

internationally-renowned critic and writer Dr Glenn Adamson.

 

Professor Simon Olding, Director of the Crafts Study Centre, said: “Having

the Secretary of State for Culture visit us is hugely significant because it

enables us to speak face-to-face with him about the issues that surround

our work here.

 

“It also gave us the opportunity to discuss the latest developments at UCA

and to remind him of the great work the university does nationally and locally

in his constituency.”

 

The University for the Creative Arts has campuses in Canterbury, Epsom,

Farnham, Maidstone and Rochester and is one of Europe’s largest specialist

Universities of art, design, architecture, media and communication. With

around 7,000 students studying on a wide range of well-established

courses, potential graphic designers’ work alongside budding journalists

and pioneering fashion designers in a highly creative environment.

Jeremy Hunt added: “The creative industries are an important part of our

economy so I’m glad UCA is nurturing the next generation of designers and

artists.”

 

The exhibition of work by pioneering furniture designer Fred Baier runs until 7 January 2012. Entrance is free.

This may be a great opportunity for makers of arts and crafts!

 

I’ve had a meeting with Bracknell’s Town Manager Graeme Mountford about the possibility of using the indoor market for selling art & crafts and he is very keen on the idea. The market is open on Fridays & Saturdays and the number of stallholders had shrunk in recent years but this means there is now quite a large area that is unused.

 

The market is indoors, has public toilets and tables are huge market ones so 2 or even 3 artists could easily share one between them. Part of the market that is at present closed off would be opened up so that all the art & craft section would be together.

 

We are looking to hold the first one, preferably before Christmas (Fri 9th & Sat 10th Dec) and there will be NO CHARGE. If this was a success, Mr Mountford is willing that we then move to the next stage of having an Arts & Craft section (and even extending the section further) once a month from then on (say, the 1st Fri & Sat of each month) at a nominal cost. We have also discussed that there would be publicity to promote the The Arts & Craft market.

 

There are also 2 large open sections outside the market that would be great for musicians, pavement artists and other entertainment during the year. This is a great opportunity for artist and craftspeople, in these difficult times, to get together and make something creative happen!

 

If anyone is interested in the first one in December, or even if you can’t make it but want to be involved in any future ones, please get back to me. Please also pass this email on to any other artists that you think may be interested.
