The Association for Contemporary Jewellery

is devoted to the promotion, representation, understanding and development of contemporary jewellery in the United Kingdom and abroad.

Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

LISA WALKER AT TE PAPA MUSEUM, WELLINGTON

Te Papa Museum in Wellington is currently staging a major retrospective of Lisa Walker's work: I want to go to my bedroom but I can't be bothered, charting her remarkable 30 year career from her studies in Dunedin in the late 1980s, through her time completing her Diplom and etsablishing herself as a major new talent in Munich, to her return to New Zealand and today.

Throughout her career, Lisa Walker has pushed toward the extreme. She is described as a ‘contemporary archaeologist’, excavating culture, art, fashion, and photography for ideas and materials. An extraordinary range of works is on display, made from materials including copper, pearls, and pounamu, to found objects like LEGO, cell phones, and egg beaters.

Gallery Funaki, invites jewellery artists worldwide to apply for the 2018 Mari Funaki Award for Contemporary Jewellery.
Prizes are offered in two categories. The Established Artist prize of A$8,000 is an acquisitive prize, with the winning piece entering the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria. The Emerging Artist prize of A$2,000 is a non- acquisitive prize. The selected work will be exhibited at Gallery Funaki in a major exhibition in Aug-Sept 2018. Preparations for the ACJ Members’ show Choice! Summer at the New Ashgate Gallery is well underway.

The show will take place between the 9 June and 21 July 2018.

The private view will be held on the 8th June 2018 from 6 - 8pm. All welcome.

Leaders come together to discuss topics at the intersection of craft and higher education, research, and museum practice. Previous participants have included museum directors, curators, university faculty, scholars, editors, critics and artists with diverse media expertise. The discussions have informed the programs offered by the Center and have nurtured relationships across the various disciplines where craft is learned, researched, and/or shared with the public. Think Tanks have also inspired initiatives such as Makers, the first comprehensive survey of contemporary craft in the United States, the Journal of Modern Craft, and the Craft Research Fund Program.

Designs Aiming for a New #GunSense Emphasis on Regulations & Reform

The Rhode Island Coalition Against Gun Violence (RICAGV) was founded in 2013 after the Sandy Hook Shooting. The organization works with volunteers across the state to lobby and provide education around common sense legislative solutions to violence. Since the tragedy in Parkland, Florida the RICAGV has doubled down on their legislative solutions to ban weapons of war and prevent the militarization of our schools. For this initiative, the RICAGV is proud to support the One Gone Gun project which is working to organize a gun buy back in the state of Rhode Island.

We are looking for bold, affordable works of wearable, useable or decorative art to further an awareness of the gun violence epidemic we still face. We hope to promote conversations that spark debate while providing needed resources to support real action including a planned gun amnesty/buy-back organized by artist Scott Lapham. The competition will also support the RICAGV’s continued advocacy for responsible gun laws.

Designers, artists and metalsmiths are intrigued by material, technique and the challenges presented by engineering obstacles. Not only do they shape objects for wear, use and decoration but also for political commentary. The goal of this competition is to showcase, promote and sell the best designs which may employ an arsenal of wit and skill to transform weapon imagery beyond its deadly intent. The winning entries will ultimately support the entrants as well as the efforts of the RICAGV.
