The Jewellery Skills Award

Jewellery Skills Award
http://www.acj.org.uk/index.php/2-uncategorised/386-the-jewellery-s...
Creative & Cultural Skills is a campaigning organisation that, mainly through the National Skills Academy, champions youth employment and fair access.
It has a charitable mission to:
• give young people opportunities to work and learn in the creative industries
• ensure that employers benefit from a skilled generation of talent
• help the creative industries continue on a course of economic growth.
UK-based C&C Skills has been fully involved in the theatre and music sectors for many years; only relatively recently becoming a welcome advocate and instigator of development in the jewellery and silver industry. Over the last two years a viable apprenticeship structure has been established, while most recently the organisation has been enabled to conduct its own training programmes.
The ACJ is a Supporter of C&C Skills and is pleased to help promote their annual awards.
In addition to recognising notable achievements by apprentices these awards celebrate inspirational mentors and managers in the creative industries who epitomize Creative & Cultural Skills’ values:
• give young people opportunities to work and learn in the creative industries
• ensure that employers benefit from a skilled generation of talent
• help the creative industries continue on a course of economic growth.
Last year, the first Jewellery Skills Award was presented to Brian Hill; a well-deserved recognition for his involvement over many years with training and promotion of skill development through his work with students at Rochester and the Goldsmiths’ Craft & Design Council.
Nominations for the 2016 Awards, relating to apprentices and mentors, are now being requested.
Details may be seen at http://ccskills.org.uk/supporters/awards/nominate though please note that the deadline for receipt of nominations is 8th January!

2016 is being declared Sheffield’s ‘Year of Making’.

The high-profile, £1.5 million festival will involve a big programme of events, bringing together craftspeople, artists, musicians, the business community and academics.

The aim is to celebrate what Sheffield does best - from advanced manufacturing to visual arts, theatre, music, heritage crafts and more - as well as identifying new paths to success for the city.

It is being led by the Sheffield Culture Consortium - set up in 2011 and comprised of the city’s arts chiefs - along with major partner Sheffield University. The campaign is also being backed by Sheffield Hallam University, the Chamber of Commerce, Made in Sheffield, The Cutlers’ Company and Sheffield Council.

A ‘rich, city-wide’ programme is promised, ranging from exhibitions and theatre to heritage trails and concerts.

New elements of existing events, such as Tramlines and Off the Shelf, will be incorporated under the Year of Making banner.

The official launch is planned for February, but the first date on the calendar is In The Making, an exhibition at the Millennium Gallery exploring Victorian art critic John Ruskin’s ideas of making.

In July a further Millennium Gallery show simply called Made In Sheffield is planned, and a production at the Crucible by the Sheffield People’s Theatre will begin in June.
