Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

North Country Studio Workshops

I'm writing to tell you about a very special opportunity this winter.

Every two years the New England crafts community hosts a hands-on conference to which craftspeople of all stripes come from all points of the globe; to teach, to study, and to spend several days among our piers. This opportunity only happens once every two years. NCSW is held at Bennington College campus in southern Vermont this January 28th- February 2nd, 2014. Thirteen artists and craftspeople will teach workshops on a variety of topics. My workshop will combine PMC and polymer clay.

To read about the workshops and for more information please go to http://www.northcountrystudioworkshops.org/index.php/2014-workshops/

I also have a few seats remaining in one of my fall classes I teach here in my studio: Revolving Ring with Polymer Inlay Sept 27-30. This class combines PMC with roll printed and hand painted polymer clay to create a versatile ring that can be worn with the painted side visible, or flipped so the subdued silver side is shown.

For more information please go to "Schedule" on my web site: http://www.celiefago.com/two_variations_on_the_revol.html

Best regards,

Celie

Hello Craft Seeker
July stands for joy. This is not only because of our exciting summer competition themed around ‘joy’, or even the inspiring new makers we’ve welcomed to Craft Finder, but because of all you lovely people we met at Art in Action.

One or two of you expressed your regret for not hearing about us before you went on holiday. Sorry! But next time you go away remember to use the Find Craft search – save bags of time and plan exciting things to do, galleries to see and beautiful objects to buy.

A warm welcome to all the new subscribers to our joyful July newsletter.

#click&collect competition
Our summer competition is in full swing. To win £100 craft from one of 10 makers, we’re asking you to curate a personal collection around the theme of ‘joy’ and submit it here by the 12th August. Own Art and the Crafts Council will be judging the competition. We’ve got some fabulous entries already, such as this by Lizzie Hoeppner who chose Ella Robinson’s ‘One Little Lie' as one of the pieces in her joyful collection. Get your collection going - don't miss out!

Our new makers
Sam Photic is a contemporary jeweller with a passion for abstract forms and bright, bold colours. Modernist graphic patterns and primary colours are repeated throughout Sam’s work in a nod to Mondrian and his contemporaries. We think that these would look great against monochrome for a high summer 1930s look.

Kate Rattray makes mosaics informed by nature and myth. Often working in a narrative series, we see birds, trees, skies and suns represented in pleasing motifs and gorgeous earthy colours. You can see all the latest makers on Pinterest.

The crafthaus project grant is awarded every September to a crafthaus member, regardless of location, professional background or craft field. It is intended to provide assistance/funding for a personal or group project.
This is how it works:
Crafthaus members send in their proposed projects via email (no entry fee.) The general crafthaus membership and their supporters decide by popular vote which project they want to see supported. Crafthaus provides the project funding. The recipient blogs about the project from start to finish as a 'thank you' back to the crafthaus community.

All submitted projects will be proposed to the crafthaus membership early September and will be up for public vote for 15 days. All projects are proposed anonymously, without revealing personal information (name) about the submitting party. That way the project idea is front and center, not the person who is submitting.

Information given to crafthaus voters:
a) Outline of project, purpose/goal
b) Start date of project and duration
c) Location of project
d) Requested funding amount
e) Other information, e.g. images or other relevant (visual) documentation to further illustrate project

What is the payoff for the crafthaus membership ?
The satisfaction of knowing that their vote enabled a fellow crafthauser get funding for a great project. In addition the recipient will regularly update the crafthaus membership on the progress of the winning project. The membership is invited to follow the project from beginning to end, ask questions and discuss the project with the artist/artist group during the implementation phase.

Funding Amount: $400 max.

Submission Deadline: August 15 annually (email received.)

  • The Crafts Council and Holts Academy have paired up to start the Contemporary Craft Enterprise Diploma, and a jolly good thing it is too. A new and exclusive nationally-recognised qualification, the programme will help makers take their first steps in starting their own craft business.
