These works continued my investigations into the relationship between the symbolic function of objects and their more practical uses.
Each tool was created in response to a found fragment.
I am inspired by the aesthetic of repair and honesty in mechanics that was valued in earlier mechanical tools, apparatus and implements, but is all but lost in modern technology.
I have consciously ensured the integrity of the found fragment is maintained, and my additions are obvious. I am cognisant that materials and objects carry meaning beyond their intended purpose, and have worked with these fragments to uncover new meanings; these objects transform fragments into ‘functional’ tools with new purpose.
They were first exhibited as a solo exhibition at Artisan in Brisbane (AU) and more recently the series was short listed for and then awarded the SCAP 3D Award (Noosa AU).
