PARTICIPATORY SPORT FOR CRAFT ARTISTS
"Cold Genius" - a pendant based on an aria from Purcell's opera, "King Arthur". In this aria, the spirit of love comes down from the heaven to awaken winter from his icy slumber. I became obsessed by this piece of music some time ago and it wasn't until I had a discussion with a friend that I realised that the answer was to create a "theatre" in which the drama could be played out.
Here you can see "Act 3", the piece is open, the curtain has been lifted and the sleeping figure - porcelain, made by the phenomenally talented Lisa Stevens and based on a William Blake drawing - is approached by the spirit.
The snowflakes are all hand-cut (every one is different) and each is set with a diamond. The lump of "ice" under which the figure lies is a rough aquamarine crystal. The figure can be removed and worn separately as a brooch.
