lampworked, borosilicate glass | 19.5" x 9" x 8"
Robert Mickelsen came to glass informally. A year of college and a two-year apprenticeship with a professional lampworker, Mickelsen was eventually inspired by one of the world’s finest flameworkers, Paul Stankard, to follow his dream. He is very interested in common images—images that humans can all identify as they are carried in the synapses of our brains. Of his most recently work, Mickelsen notes that he “utilizes the technique of networking in concert with intricate image-sculpting. The networking creates the underlying form, but it also serves the dual purpose of providing a structure, a kind of scaffolding, to support detailed sculptural imagery. By creating a form that appears to be covered in imagery that relates to that form I set up a narrative that cannot be expressed with either form by itself. Sometimes the form and imagery relate in an obvious way. Sometimes, and these are my favorites, the relationship is not so clear”. Mickelsen teaches extensively at highly regarded glass schools including the Pilchuck Glass School, Penland School of Crafts, Studio at the Corning Museum of Glass, and Urban Glass in Brooklyn. He is a prolific writer and has written many articles and a web-book titled Mondo Fiamma, a worldwide overview of contemporary flameworked art. Mickelsen is currently serves on the board of directors of the Glass Art Society. Represented in some of the finest galleries in the US, his work is included in many prominent collections including the Renwick Gallery of American Crafts at the Smithsonian Institution, the Corning Museum of Glass, The Toledo Museum of Art, The Carnegie Museum of Art, The Mint Museum, The Cleveland Museum of Art, The Museum of American Glass at Wheaton Village, and the Pilchuck Glass School. Mickelsen has shown locally with morgan for several years both in Pittsburgh and Glassweekend, Millville, NJ. Mickelsen taught at the Pittsburgh Glass Center in July.
