She Sits Between (mountains gazing at the sea) is another work in my ongoing landscape memoir series. The piece is made in locally salvaged silver quandong, and hoop pine plywood from local plantations. This stack laminated plywood has been carved through in a way that replicates the erosive forces that have given rise to the hinterland landscape where I live and work, and exposes the "layers" of the land. The hexagonal forms used refers to the distinctive cooling crystals of basalt, broken pieces of which litter my local environment. The hinterland landscape is partially shaped by volcanic incursions – the inselbergs formed by lava flows that are such a distinctive feature literally and metaphorically frame our views of the world.
