Describe your media/materials you work with
silver, copper, enamel, leather, thread, non-things

i like the idea of making something that is nothing in particular. everyone sees something in everything-- in a shape, in a line, in a color-- it is our way of identifying or making sense of what we see. thus, non-things - they could be something, but guess what, they aren't.

Dear Lynn,

hi lynn, i saw your work "objects to incorporate into your everyday life" and i have a technical q. i am a torch-firer also. i luv firescale and don't try to avoid it, but occasionally i'd really like to minimize it. you have a lot of pieces in that work and they all look so smooth and kiln-fired. do you have a trick/secret to keeping the firescale minimized? do you use a special type of firing trivet, as that is where most of my firescale comes from in my pieces. thx so much for any help/thoughts you can provide. anne

Lynn,

I will be at SNAG this year. The University of Illinois will have a booth again this year in the Connections Room. It's always a good time for me to catch up with my former students. There are ten of us going from the U of I. I was in Philly two weeks ago for the NICHE Awards ceremony...I was asked to present the awards in the Jewelry category. Two of my MFA candidates won NICHE Awards this year and they were excited. I had some time to see some exhibitions and check out the staircase of the Philadelphia Art Museum...I'm wearing one of my pieces in Jewelry in Motion during the conference. I think the presenters have to catwalk that staircase. Should be fun. I hope I don't trip!

Lynn,

I can sympathize with what you are going through at the moment. I have eight metal undergraduates who are working on BFA thesis work at the moment. Good luck on your work and your exhibition. Your work is of a higher caliber than most undergraduate work. What would you like to do after you graduate? Are you attending the SNAG conference in May?

Lynn,

Your work is fantastic! Are you an undergrad or grad at Western Michigan?

Hey Lynn--thanks for the comment on my work. Your work is quite lovely too!

To answer your question: yes, you are right about the wood. I also use a lot of mixed media materials and altered found objects, and then cover it all with liberal coatings of thick paint. I was trained as a metalsmith and learned a lot from all the instruction on how to work so precisely, so I know those influences still show up, somehow.

Call for artists....

"Behind the Brooch"

I have always thought that the back of a jewelry piece is as important as the front. If you feel the same way, consider sending images of the front and backside of your brooches to Lorena Angulo asap. Lorena is looking for images to place in a future crafthaus online exhibition!
