Workshop Opportunity With Ruudt Peters Summer 2017

workshop RUUDT PETERS  assistant KOEN JACOBS

After the success of the last 16 years, this year Ruudt Peters begins his summer workshop under the title NOW RADICAL. Peters has been a professor at three of the most prestigious universities in Europe, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam 1990-2000, Ädellab at Konstfack University of Arts and Crafts in Stockholm 2004-2009, Alchimia Contemporary Jewellery School in Florence 2009-2015. Through his Summer School he continues his teaching with a private program intended for students or graduates of art academies, and artists/designers/teachers who seek to deepen their work. Every year an international group of fine art artists and jewelry-makers participate in his workshop. The workshops are held in the countryside in the south of the Netherlands.

NOW RADICAL
Jewellery making is a safe profession, it focuses on decoration and adornment. It is difficult to keep concepts clear to the end – the wearer looking always over the shoulder of the maker. In NOW RADICAL we will avoid the voice of society, of mothers and fathers, we will try to be as personally radical as possible. We will turn away from trends in the field, we seek a ‘radical’ that does not rage against an external machine… but instead challenges and overturns the regulations within our own practices. We have to go over borders before we see our own habits. In NOW RADICAL we will each seek a unique and personal ‘radicality’

In NOW RADICAL we emphasize an awareness of your place as artist/jewelry-maker in the world. NOW RADICAL takes the position between your self and the world. Between the real and the fake. In NOW RADICAL we encourage your own image and habits and firmly confront you with them through art and art-jewellery making. NOW RADICAL is about strength, we will positively convert this energy into art and art jewellery. In NOW RADICAL we will only use natural materials. Materials which are supplied raw from the earth. By treating these materials with respect there arises honor and another sort of form language - a language close to man, and the wearer of jewellery.

In this workshop NOW RADICAL we learn how to look, work and talk. We have to stand for what we are, and what we are making. NOW RADICAL is a workshop where we will discover and explore the power of the maker. You will fine tune and connect with our own radicality, guiding yourself on the way to delve deeper into your own visual language and see yourself better.

Together we will search for your own “RADICALITY”. This means that you will get in contact with yourself. We will guide you through your primary experience, teach you to formulate your own positions, and support you in translating this into making fine art and art jewellery. NOW RADICAL is about taking another approach at our experience of making, a statement about how you can relate to your own inner force. Artists, students and teachers are stimulated to produce work around this idea. By doing so, it is important that there is not only rational reflection, but also allowing the subconscious to enter into the work process. Each participant, fine-artist or art-jeweler will formulate the frame of her/his reference.

The NOW RADICAL course is built on a step-by-step process of education in which an end product is not the most important goal. The emphasis lies on personal guidance and development. The participants are given the tools with which to continue this process on their own. By means of direct action people learn to take steps.
