At last the festive season is behind me and I managed to get back to the bench today.
I was given a new saw for Christmas, one of the "Knew Concepts" saws which is completely rigid. Although it is a bit fiddly to get blades into, it is an amazing tool: from the second I started to cut with it, I knew that I would not be going back to my old, springy iron frame. Because the frame is rigid the blade rarely catches in the way that we are used to with traditional frames.
I was thinking about this and wondered if this is the first major change to the jeweller's piercing saw since the middle-ages!
"Cold Genius" is back on the bench again. I've done a load of work on the box section of the piece and today completed the major construction work on it:
I'll post more photographs tomorrow.

Oops! No, I meant July 2011.
Sophia: See here for details! The pattern on this was cut with an 8/0 sawblade in 1.2mm silver using the 5" saw.
Rebecca: all of mine came from Tamizan. I never thought to point her in this direction. Can non-members view these pages on Crafthaus?
I have had my iron saw for 27 years and it was a little bit sad when I put it in the cupboard!
I would definitely suggest going for the 5" but the 8" is lighter than even my 3" iron saw, though probably not so good on tiny things. It is pretty sturdy, but I've not really had it for long enough to know.
I've been tempted by these lately, too... good to hear more feedback about them!
I'm so close to Pittsburgh these days Dauvit and have family there, so please do keep me posted as to when/where you'll be teaching... would love to see your face in person!
Brigitte, since you told me that you are in Pittsburgh and since I discovered that Sharon Massey actually works where I will be holding my classes, I am very, very excited too! I've loved Sharon's work since I saw it in a book a few years ago and one of her pieces graces my small collection of work by other jewellers.
I am looking forward to meeting some of the other people - such as Stevie and yourself - whom I also hold in high esteem.
