British Jewellers’ Association and The Fairtrade Foundation ‘I Do’ Competition

The British Jewellers’ Association has combined forces with The Fairtrade Foundation, Hockley Mint and Clark Diamonds to further boost the Foundation’s, already highly successful ‘I Do’ campaign with a competition especially for designers wishing to work, or already working in Fairtrade Gold.

Entries to the competition should be presented either as scale drawings (on A4 paper) or as CAD files.

The winning design will be produced in Fairtrade gold donated by Hockley Mint which will work with the designer to manufacture the piece. The ethically-sourced diamonds for the design will be supplied by the Birmingham diamond dealer, Clark Diamonds.

The finished piece will be donated to the BJA (an association within the BATF), working in conjunction with the Fairtrade Foundation, to raise awareness for the Foundation .

The winner will benefit from tremendous PR and promotional opportunities in the run up to and during International Jewellery London where their design will be on display.

THE DESIGN BRIEF

The judges will be looking for:

A matching wedding and engagement ring set, to suit the modern bride
The design must feature a 50pt round brilliant diamond together with up to ½ a carat’s worth of small stones which can be used in any way the designer sees fit.
RULES FOR ENTRY

The competition is open to jewellery designers and jewellery producers based in the UK.
Entries should be designed specifically for this competition.
Entries should be presented either as scale drawings (on A4 paper) or as CAD files.
The designer of the winning piece will need to be available to liaise with Hockley Mint during June and July over the manufacture of their winning design.
The winning designer must also be prepared to attend a prize-giving and publicity event at IJL (6th-8th September) where the winning design will be on display on the BJA stand for the duration of the show.
The copyright in the ring will remain the property of the winner but should they wish to reproduce the design for sale this would be on the understanding that further pieces should be made in Fairtrade metal.
The BJA and The Fairtrade Foundation will have the right to use photographs of the ring for on-going publicity purposes.
Entrants who require their drawings to be returned to them must enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope for this purpose.
The judges’ decision is final.
TO ENTER

Simply fill in the form below and return it to the British Jewellers’ Association together with your design by 1st June, 2015. The winning piece will be completed by 17th July to allow sufficient time for photography and promotional activities prior to IJL

Postgraduate support scheme
http://www.ucreative.ac.uk/financial-support/postgraduate-support-s...

For 2015 entry we have a number of £10,000 bursaries jointly funded by UCA and HEFCE in this one-off scheme.
Eligibility

The idea of the Postgraduate Support Scheme is to encourage participation from individuals who historically have been under-represented at Masters level (this scheme does not include the MArch).

To be eligible you must be starting a full- or part-time Masters-level course at UCA in 2015. Applicants must be in a group currently under-represented in the UCA taught postgraduate community and must meet all of the criteria set out below to be considered for an award.

You must meet all of the criteria

Graduating from a three-year undergraduate programme in summer 2015, from an English institution
Started undergraduate studies in 2012 under the new tuition fee regime
Be a UK or an EU national
Be currently resident in the UK or EU
Not already in possession of an MA or higher-level qualification
Starting a Masters programme at UCA in September 2015
Come from an area where it is unusual for people to go to university: this is defined by the government's classification called Polar 3, to meet this criterion the address you lived at in the year before you commenced undergraduate study must fall into 'quintile 1 or 2'.

You can check your address area using the Participation of Local Areas (POLAR) search tool (please note this information only covers the UK), you can also look up your postcode here. If your postcode is listed as being in quintile 1 or 2 under either heading (Young participation or Adult HE) you should consider making an application for PSS support. We will check your postcode eligibility when we process your application.
How to Apply

You must first apply and be offered a place on a UCA Masters course to commence in 2015. Once you have been offered a place you can download the PSS application form which must be completed and returned with any required evidence by the deadline given. We will notify successful applicants of their award before the start of the 2015/16 academic year.

If you defer the start of your Masters course until 2016 you will lose eligibility to be considered for a PSS award - this scheme is only available to students starting a course in 2015.

Applications will be considered on a strictly first-come first-served basis.
How much is a PSS award worth?

Successful applicants will receive a £10,000 award which will be applied to the fees for your course in the first instance, with the balance (where relevant) paid as a maintenance grant in two instalments.
Questions?

Please email us at bursaries@ucreative.ac.uk if you have any questions about the PSS scheme.

Craftspace is curating a new project in Somerset, for Somerset Art Works, which is offering a residency/commission and several other commissions. I’d be very grateful if you could circulate or signpost the opportunity to relevant people, particularly makers.
Many thanks
Deirdre

‘Gather-ing'
Contemporary craft residency and commissions for The Priory, in Stoke Sub Hamdon, Somerset.
Initiated by Somerset Art Works in partnership with the National Trust and curated by Craftspace.

We are seeking expressions of interest for a Lead Artist’s residency and commission plus three further associate artists’ commissions to take place between June and September 2015 and focusing on a large tithe barn. The aim is to create new work that responds to the ‘spirit of place’, local identity and the rural context, researching and referencing the heritage of the site and its changing uses. Artists are also invited to focus on the generic social and physical aspects of the ‘barn’. Why such large tithe barns were developed and consideration of their role at the heart of medieval life. How and why this building type survives to this day and a re-imagining of the role it might have today. Commissions can also have the effect of enabling visitors to experience the barn in a different way. The Priory is situated in the centre of Stoke Sub Hamdon, a small rural town. It represents a rare and unique group of medieval domestic and agricultural buildings that can demonstrate over 700 years of local and national religious, social, economic and cultural history in England.

The project will showcase contemporary craft: makers, skills, materials and thinking in the context of Somerset Art Weeks which will take place from the 3rd to 18th October 2015. It will meet the aspiration of Somerset Art Works to ‘inspire and challenge’ audiences and ‘raise the quality of craft made and seen in Somerset’ by engaging craft practitioners with a track record of excellence and ability to make creative, imaginative and innovative responses to the site and brief.

For the National Trust in Somerset this project links to their ambition and aspirations to:
·         Increase public access and extend use of The Priory at Stoke Sub Hamdon site.
·         Engage the local resident population and establish a sense of ownership within the community.
·         Facilitate and develop better engagement of their core visitor segments.
·         Provide opportunities to work with the surrounding community.

To receive the brief and expression of interest please email d.figueiredo@craftspace.co.uk  Deadline Tuesday 5th May.
