Founded as a membership association in 1997 and registered as a Limited Company in 2006, it recognises a need to foster discussion, debate and critical review and interaction amongst its members. To this end we organise conferences, lectures, seminars, workshops and an annual general meeting for our members. Our regular newsletter, findings, features reviews, information, comment, book offers and discounts and is of benefit to both our members and the wider public. We also produce a monthly e-bulletin featuring news and opportunities.

We welcome as members practising jewellers, associated designers and crafts people, educators, students, gallery owners and retailers, museum curators, critics and collectors - indeed, anyone with an interest in contemporary jewellery.

Crafts Book Club

Listen again to Crafts magazine’s inaugural Book Club

The Crafts magazine Book Club celebrates the relationship between writing and making. There has been a multitude of brilliant books that explore the nature of craftsmanship or have been written by makers themselves.

Be inspired by new textiles and jewellery from West Sweden

Curated by Katarina Karlsson/Konsthantverkscentrum and Grace Whowell

September 2015 – March 2016

Textil/Juvel: Contemporary Craft from West Sweden is a stunning and thought provoking exhibition of contemporary jewellery and textiles from seven leading makers, reflecting current trends in Swedish making. Textil/Juvel is the fourth in the Art Unpacked series of exhibitions from Chrysalis Arts, and has been devised with Konsthantverkscentrum -The Crafts Centre, Sweden.

The artists in Textil/ Juvel weave together a high level of skill and story, combining traditional techniques and new technologies to explore our relationship with the world. The exhibition demonstrates how artists from West Sweden are taking their rich craft heritage to forge new ways of working, using natural materials- seeds, wood, appropriated machine made objects and finely crafted metal and textiles. Textil/Juvel is a snapshot of a dynamic craft movement in Sweden, concerned with the natural world and our impact on it.

10 November 2015 – 27 January 2016 Accrington Library

Real to Reel: The Craft Film Festival

Coming soon to the Picturehouse Central in London

Craft has a very special relationship with film. Craft on film can be hypnotic, surprising and magical.  The resurgence of interest in craft has resulted in a host of beautiful and interesting new films on the topic.

From BBC Four’s unhurried look at making in 2015 to Oscar-nominated film director Morgan Spurlock turning his attention to the handmade in his next feature film Crafted – craft looks good on screen.

It’s why we are hosting our first ever craft film festival this May during London Craft Week. We’re taking over Picturehouse Central in London on the 4 and 5 of May to play a programme of films relating to craft.

From elegant documentaries, story-led films and animation to seeing skill in action or materials from a new angle and celebrating the craft of film-making - Real to Reel: The Craft Film Festival will show an array of films that capture the wonder of craft.

If you have a made a film with a craft connection in the last two years then you could submit a film to Real to Reel.

So get the dates in your diary and let us know how you like your popcorn.
