The rise of crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have been a huge boost to artists and entrepreneurs seeking seed funding for a variety of projects. Donald Trump has taken notice and launched his own crowdfunding site FundAnything. As explained in this Mashable Op-Ed piece by Seth Fiegerman, Trump will be offering his own money to back projects each week. What do you think of Trump getting involved with crowdfunding? Would…Continue

A few years ago, when I was looking for new career opportunities I encountered a bias against my creativity. Granted this was the peak of the Great Recession and employers had large candidate pools to select from for enhancing their organizations. However, hearing comments such as, "In reviewing your resume, I see you've been an artist, a teacher, done volunteer work and currently pursuing your MBA. I don't see anything professional in your history." certainly felt like a slap in the face. It…Continue

As 2012 comes to close, I'm taking time to reflect on the year, what a wild roller coaster ride it has been, and finalizing my plans for 2013. Below is an article by Gregory McKewon that makes a great point about how easy it is to become consumed by our careers and simple steps for avoiding the trap of "being too busy living to think about life!" Happy reading-Michelle…Continue

I know many of us would rather talk about the fun and dare I say “sexy” side of our art businesses, inspiration, materials, and processes, than talk about business insurance. The destruction from Hurricane Sandy is unfathomable and its impact on the creative community and businesses of all sizes will be felt for some time. Please support the Red Cross and CERF to help those affected…Continue

Last week, I won the 2nd Place Prize in the COSE Arts Business Challenge Awards. This was my first time entering a business challenge and the competition was fierce. 6 finalists were selected and I was the only independent artist and jeweler on the list. It really sucks when something doesn't turn out the way we planned, but like it or not failure is a valuable part of the learning process. As an entrepreneur, I'm always fascinated by the ways in which others bounce back from adversity, be it a minor setback or a spectacular crash and burn failure. In researching such stories I came across Scott Edinger's article "Getting Ready to Fail." In it he outlines 5 tips for how to handle failure better so that you can bounce back quickly.…Continue

The Importance of the F-Word and Taking Smart Risks Failure. It’s not a topic we often talk about and is typically associated with a popular four-letter F-word, but sharing the lessons we learn from failure are often far more valuable than sharing our successes. The past 3 years have taught me a lot about the importance of failure and risk. Failure, or more importantly the fear of failure, is a paralyzing force. It stops you in your tracks before you ever get started. It keeps you up at…Continue

Comment by Michelle Pajak-Reynolds on October 25, 2012 at 9:09am Hi Tom, thanks for posting about how Facebook changes are impacting your business. I've reposted your comments as a discussion so everyone can chime in. http://crafthaus.ning.com/group/emerge/forum/topics/facebook-change...
Comment by Tom McCarthy on October 24, 2012 at 8:43pm More Facebook changes. This seems to be the forum for this so here goes.
Facebook has changed the way our pages turn up
in the news feeds of our followers. Followers are now going to have to have your page in an "Interest List" that they create in order to see your posts. This will add some but not all of your posts into their newsfeeds. They can access all of your posts by clicking on their interest lists.
Here are some official answers about how to do all of this https://www.facebook.com/help/440058336033758/
You can circumvent this by paying to promote your posts or you can just let your followers know that they need to use interest lists to keep in touch. I've posted this on both my profile and page so this may be redundant to some of you. However, in these early stages, I'm not sure who is currently seeing what. Case in point. Before I heard about this change, I made a post on my page and then shared the same post to my wall. The page post garnered 11 likes and 4 comments. The wall post got 49 likes and 17 comments. Several earlier page posts got no response at all.
So that's what's up. Ultimately this might help me clean up my newsfeed and make it more relevant to me. Until this catches on, you may find your page posts lost in the shuffle to your other followers, so let them know (in all of that spare time we all have.) I would add that you should post the information on both your wall and your page as your wall post will probably reach more people and you likely share some audience. Plus it will help distribute the info in general to people who are following any page.
Michelle, please feel free to move this if you feel there is a better spot for it!

Comment by Michelle Pajak-Reynolds on November 15, 2011 at 12:00pm BRAVO to eMERGE reader Natalie Abrams. Her work in the Charlotte ARTery show receives great reviews.
"Some of the most fascinating pieces in the show were Natalie Abrams wax works.....The Abrams’ pieces are solid, yet fluid and simple, yet complex. These wax wall sculptures seem light like fabric, with organic patterns that make it feel as though it once had life."
