We move in cycles, and right now bone, horn, antler and shell are in focus. Carving is always a favorite technique, but scrimshaw has always piqued our interest too. Particularly primitive forms. This small 3/8 in. pair of carved and scrimshawed bone disks had been floating around in our brains for a while and it was time for them to come out.
Back story: John made a tool steel rotary bur that mimics an ancient stone tool to cut the little circles. Anxious to test the new bur he picked up a piece of bone, and Viola!, It cut spectacularly well and aggressively, right through the bone and his finger. John now has a small circle carved on the index finger bone of of his left hand.
