Seeing NCECA: A Student’s Perspective

As a student of ceramics at Berea College, I’m always observing and learning about the ceramics world. NCECA, however, takes the fire of my learning to a whole new cone pack. This blog will capture my excitement of the before, during, and after of the 2013 NCECA. I will talk to ceramicists, explore dazzling exhibits, and embrace all that the NCECA paradise has to offer. This blog will be the log in which I jot all my gushing observations!See More

A Student’s Perspective: Critiques, Creators, and Crazy Dancing

NCECA: A Student Perspective, Day 2 Duncan BlountI wish I had an NCECA pause button! Yesterday was nonstop meeting/learning/seeing/experiencing/wowing.  Here are some of this student’s favorite moments, that maybe you can revisit today:Student CritiqueThe student critique was incredibly helpful! My critique was with a potter named Brian and he took a look at some of my salt-fired work. It was interesting to consider consistency in my mugs; my handles take on a thin wildness that the smooth,…See More

Seeing NCECA: A Student’s Perspective, Day 1

Student Perspective Day 1, Duncan Blount What an amazing first day! Here are some of the incredible highlights:The First Purchase! After registration, I sat down with some other members at a small table not too far away. We all dug into our NCECA bags like it was Christmas, and then dove into our program schedules. I circled the events for the day (last year I was frantically running around everywhere with no plan), and headed to the Gallery Expo. After gawking at the initial displays, I made my…See More

A Bit About Me

Hello! My name is Roswell Duncan Bryant Blount. I’m 21 years old, and I currently attend Berea College as both an English major and a Ceramics Apprentice. I work 10 hours a week to pay for my tuition, during which I make mugs and bowls for the craft program. As part of an outreach program, I demonstrate making pots to members of the community. I also am a Senator for the Student Government, and an ambassador to alumni and friends of the college who come for visits.Ceramics brings me a powerful…See More

Ceramics Outreach Program: Berea Walk with the Arts

Walk with the Arts: Fourth Grade Craft Outreach Program

Fourth grade is a spectacular frame of mind. The energy, bravery, and creativity of the children I talked to and demonstrated for never faltered, despite the pouring rain! I spotted similarities in each group and compared them with my own fourth grade experience: I saw the class clown (which was me!), the super-smart-shy-girl, and even that restless trouble maker. And amazingly, every student that I presented to…

Berea College Ceramic Apprenticeship Program: Shaping Excellence

Berea College, a small liberal arts college in central Kentucky, supports a variety of beneficent programs, but one in particular glimmers out among the rest. In 1970, the Berea College Craft department instated the Ceramic Apprenticeship Program. This addition to Berea’s traditional folk arts offered, and continues to offer today, a way for students to hone a both professional, and personally…

Great looking work, Duncan!...I'd like to hear your impressions of the program at Berea College sometime. From what i can tell, it seems like a really strong place to learn ceramics and pottery, in particular.
