Tea For Sixty-two and Sixty-Two for Tea

Tea Sets - 1

This lurid display is another of the short projects run by the BA class, this time to introduce them to various technologies, including turning, press-forming, spining, sand-casting, thread-cutting, riveting, laser-cutting, and finishing. Yes,…

Sticky!

There is a lot of sellotape in this post.

This week saw Birmingham host Spring Fair, the largest jewellery and giftware fair in the UK. Quite aside from being the largest collection of utter tat I have ever witnessed in one place, the jewellery and watch section of the fair is always interesting and over the years, I've made a few visits here. This time around, we decided to take our entire cohort…

Two Presentations in Three Days!

Handmade By Machines - 2014 - 22

What a week! Not only have we been finishing off with the students for the year - and sometimes for ever, really - but I've been doing my best to help Karen Dicken to get the "Handmade By Machines" exhibition and…

Spring At Last

City Gate

Since my last post, spring can definitely be said to have arrived and the Easter break saw sunshine all day and every day except the last. It is great to be seeing the sky still slightly light at 9pm and to feel the warmth in the…

The Eternal City; Pomegranates Galore!

Blasphemous Rumours

What a crazy ten days! The highlight of which was definitely a long weekend in Rome, a city I have not visited since I was in school, aged 15. I went to Rome for the weekend to see the impressive exhibition "Il Tesoro Di Napoli", a collection of objects from the Museum of San Gennaro in Naples…

In Springtime A Young Man's Fancy...

in time of daffodils - WIP - 16

... as I am no longer young, it has to be said, "Daffodils"!

I've spent the last few weeks working on a charity piece which kind of got out of hand. What started off as a request for a "life-sized daffodil…

Foxtrot Pour Maria: Chanel Se Rencontrent Lang

Foxtrot Pour Maria: Chanel Se Rencontrent Lang - 31

I've been in the workshop for two whole days now, finishing up my "sautoir/parure" which imagines the jewellery which Chanel (probably with the help of Fulco Verdura) would have…

Futurism - Muse - A Ramble on music and a moment in art

A while back I received an unusual commission from fellow-jeweller, Poppy Porter, to make a piece using some titanium components from an F1 racing car. The pieces are beautifully-engineered and milled from solid blocks of metal.…

Exhibitions, New Designers and a Holiday!

Summer time at last. I've spent the last week or so in Brighton after shutting up the workshops, which I always find slightly melancholy.

Before I left there was loads of work to be done, including setting up an exhibition and making a pin for the O-pin project which I mentioned in a previous post about the Glasgow School of Art degree show. I'm fairly pleased with the pin I made from old steel…

North Glasgow College Jewellery Degree Show 2013

Last but not least - of course, these are my students - in the round of Scottish degree shows is the turn of North Glasgow College. We've only been offering degrees in Jewellery Design and Technology for three years, validated through Leeds University - the last time for Leeds, we have an exciting partnership with Dundee's own Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art starting next academic year - but this is the first year that I've personally felt part of the degree-show circuit, felt as if we…

Handmade by Machine

People familiar with my work may be surprised to learn that I use CAD (Rhino, primarily) as a design tool and that quite often, elements of my work are made using CAM processes, such as 3D milling of wax which is then cast in precious metals. My own approach to these technologies is not unique and while I don’t use them as a primary method of production, there are many makers who do – Janet Huddie,…

Ishbel and Iain

Two of my ex-students had a little Christmas preview of their new work tonight. For some very odd reason, it was held in a hi-fi shop... quite a strange location but the specialist hushed acoustics made for a really lovely feel to the show.

Ishbel Watson has been working on some new work based on Fritz Lang's "Metropolis":

So Much!

What a fiendishly busy few days! I've been working hard to make my work for the exhibition in Wales recently but between that, I've been getting quite a lot of odd commissions, largely for repeats of my older work - things like three-skull rings and wolf and bear rings. I've also been working with "humble doodler", Zook again (we worked previously on "Beneath the Skin". He asked me to make some 3d silver versions of his drawing:

Back to the Blog

Having now had a couple of weeks where a combination of loads of things on my plate and general late-autumn lethargy have conspired to prevent me from making any blog entries, I'm back to it after a week in which I saw an opera featuring a depressed singing egg and created a seriously dangerous structure.

Having seen the Call for Entries on Crafthaus for the "Hot…
