Leisa,  Thanks for connecting.  No, the ear is not medical. . .this piece is about (and for) my son, Ky.  It is specifically about how I have been able to experience the world through him:  his interest in magnifying glasses to inspect small things, for instance.  The vine growing out of the ear (which was literally sculpted while I observed his ear) references the story that children are told when they swallow a melon seed--that it will grow inside of them, and possibly out their ears.  Hope that clarifies! Leah

Believe me, I do already!  (mix fibers in with my work)  Hoping to work this summer on a series of figurative hybrid doll-forms -- traditional textile materials mostly, with found and fabricated objects glommed on.

Arts with Invisible Disabilities- Challenge Informs Creativity in Invisible:VisAble Exhibition

Posted on March 31, 2015 at 6:37am 0 Comments

I am seeking some really great, positive artists whose art is informed by an "invisible" challenge. Are you an artist doing work conceptually inspired by epilepsy? Depression? Bipolar? Deafness? or? Do you know an artist who you might recommend?

The idea for this exhibition happened when my deafness -- the most challenging of my medical issues and something I pretended didn’t exist for most of my life -- began insinuating itself into my creative fiber art practice. I…

Seeking an artist for an exhibition on Invisible Disabilities in Atlanta "Invisible: VisAble" curated by Leisa Rich

Posted on September 26, 2014 at 1:47pm 1 Comment

I am the curator of a wonderful exhibition on "hidden" or Invisible Disabilities, to be held in Atlanta, Georgia in April 2015, at Mason Murer Gallery. It is sponsored by VSA, the arts for disabilities in Atlanta. Artists so far are from Canada, the U.S. and South Africa. This is going to be an amazing opportunity for artists to showcase work about physical and mental challenges they face, and that most people do not think about!
