Monday’s Child - A Weekly Creative Shot in the Arm

Marina Dempster - Stride in These Shoes!

Marina Dempster describes her work as sculpture. Her primary technique is a contemporary translation of the pre-Columbian Huichol art of “transformational yarn painting.” She meticulously embeds beads and yarn into her forms with her hands and some improvised tools. Dempster’s shoe series shows a vivid imagination combined with a wonderful sense of humor. She describes them as extensions of the body - with feelers or organs of touch. We were absolutely wowed with her use of porcupine quills, cast metal thorns, antlers, exotic feathers and bits of fur. She’s taken a traditional folk craft and has given it a great set of wings.
