I wish I was better at documenting what I've been doing.
I get going, needing to make efficient use of my time,
and just forget about the picture taking until I complete a step.
I'm not as proficient as I'd like to be,
which would give some ease and thinking space.
I am learning fast though.
My measuring was pretty good.

I didn't have to coax the outside rings too much to get them to fit
but, I need to rethink how to go about giving dimension to the rockets.
I think the rawhide mallet tapping for stretching
sacrificed some of what I was looking at before.

Ha! rethinking is a nice idea.
What WILL will happen is after I solder the outside to the inside rings,
I'll have at them with my tools.
That's why I thought it wise to only do three first.
I needed to know what kind of trouble I was going to run into.

I have never done this type of work, may I ask why you didn't file/clean the inside edges of the top ring before soldering to the bottom ring? Or, maybe there is another step in the process I don't know about. Or, maybe it is, it just doesn't look like it because the image is so close.

I wondered the same thing the first time I made these.
My sawing is pretty good so I rarely have filing repair.
I've seen others fine tune the inside edges,
and perhaps it's a good idea,
but, with what I put the first rings through from this point on,
I didn't notice a difference
between my edges and those of the rings that were finely finished,
but then I wasn't really looking at that detail.
For now I'm just going to plow ahead.
Sooner or later I'll no doubt learn
the wisdom of taking the time to finish them at this point.
I do make LOTS of mistakes,
managing to usually pull it out in the end while learning something valuable along the way.
I'll keep taking the pictures.
(This is making me really pay attention to what I'm doing!)

If you don't have riffler files, they are great for things like this. I got mine from Rio, and I love them. I don't do detailed work like this, so I admire what you are doing.

OH, Roxy...thank-you. One of my biggest concerns has been
the C.H. members are way more technically proficient than I,
and my weekly updates would be about as interesting to them
as a weekly update by someone learning how to sharpen a wooden pencil. I've got a set of those little files, but, I didn't think to use them.
Hmm, I tend to learn things by going the long way around!
Ha, I can see me wishing I used them!
Once they are soldered together,
I'm hoping I'll be more in my own arena
where I don't have to think much about what to do.
Hopefully.

I don't know about the rest of the members, but as far as being proficient, I am just faking. I think if after you have it put together, and you realize something needs a little fine tune, a very small burr on the flex shaft may help. Get a dentist in Spring Green to save a few for you. Is there a dentist in Spring? I am not even sure. Keep it up!
