Lots to Think About

Started by Liz Steiner Jun 25, 2012. 0 Replies

While there was much to enjoy about this conference, I found that there was much that caused me to seriously (and uncomfortably) think about my future in the field and the choices I know I should be making. The first of this uncomfortable thinking moments came during Garth Clark's lecture. Of course I had the same knee jerk reaction to his comparison of studio craft as a sinking ship, but his argument made sense. We are marginalized, and there's no sense pretending that we're not. Sure, it stems from lack of understanding, and it is our duty to educate people as to what we do, but we're marginalized by people who should know better. You can see it in the simple fact that the Humor in Metal and Hot Under the Collar exhibitions weren't given space in the SMoCA galleries. After much back and forth, we were given the atrium we were in. They almost stuck us in the gift shop. Don't get me wrong, I thought the atrium was fantastic and in the end both shows looked phenomenal, but I just…Continue

Part 3: Frottage

Started by Jillian Moore Jun 19, 2012. 0 Replies

And now for the final installment of my conference wrap up that, while written a couple of weeks ago, creeps me out with my psychic ability to anticipate the rowdy comments of Crafthaus!  Alas, my many rebuttals arrived too late. With regard to the long-form lectures, I was less moved this year.  I skipped a couple because I knew they would not be ideal for me.  I want to stress that this is not a complaint!  For anyone who comes to SNAG, you should never take it personally if each piece of programming fails to rapturously capture your attention.  We’re a diverse group, and I enjoy picking and choosing so that I can take a breather now and then.  I didn’t attend Steve Midgett’s or Kevin O’Dwyer’s…Continue

Lots to Improve (Seriously)

While there was much to enjoy about this conference, I found that there was also much that was not so great. The first thing that was not so great? The Digital Student Show. I walked in a couple minutes late, so I missed the opening statements, and not being a student myself this year, I didn't apply. It wasn't until about half way through that I realized that the coordinators had deviated from the traditional format. I got the low down from some students and educators after the fact, and the more I heard, the more upset I became. First off, the student show wasn't jurried. It was up to each individual program to submit a presentation of work, and then all works were to be included in the Digital Show. It was up to individual program faculty to jury their own students work, but they were never given a set limit of images they could submit. This lead to the coordinators receiving more than 800 images, which of course then had to be edited. Well. What the hell did you think was going to…Continue

Part 1: Exhibitionism

local flora to distract the weirdos So where to begin post-SNAG 2012?  First impressions are that dehydration adds a nice layer of incapacitation on top of the usual exhaustion.  Fun fact, I get vertigo when I’m dehydrated so my head is literally spinning. Like the sediment in my inner ear, I’m still waiting for things to settle so I can get my bearings.  This year was particularly surreal, as I had feared and anticipated it would be.  The good thing about a resort is that everyone spends a lot of time together in the communal spaces catching up, or making new friends.  The bad thing about a resort is that you’re all trapped on the island and some people did not come to make friends. This conference was maybe half as big as Seattle’s... Now Seattle…Continue

It was a wonderful conference. I loved Garth Clark's contributions. A tough, but necessary wake-up call served with a good dose of humor.
Thank you very much to Lynette Andreasen, Becky McDonah, Tedd McDonah for putting this event together for us. A super huge thank you to Danielle Embry, Charity Hall and Maureen Brusa Zappellini for navigating the difficult exhibition waters. Your generous assistance was absolutely invaluable. I heard nothing but rave reviews about the exhibits !!!
It's always great to see everyone again and I am honored to now serve on the board. Thank you for voting. Remember, I am doing this FOR YOU. So, if you have remarks, suggestions, critique, ideas, want to volunteer, participate, run for the board, have a project in mind: let me know so that we can discuss this. WE are SNAG. WE make it happen! Hugs from Pittsburgh and Happy Memorial Day!

On Friday, the Smaller Conference Experience has invited keynote speaker Garth Clark for an informal lunch conversation.

Garth is always out spoken and opinionated. You haven't heard anything until you have seen what he has to say.

Purchase your Grap and Go lunch in advance. Space is limited.

Harriete

Anyone is welcome to submit questions in advance to jump start the conversation.

What Have I Been Up To?

Since returning from Istanbul, it has been non-stop in the workshop, preparing work for orders and making some new pieces too. I've sidelined a number of works-in-progress in order to get on with more pressing issues, so there are no updates on my Chanel-inspired piece or my tribute to Alexander McQueen, though I have progressed apace with my first foray into electronics in jewellery, "14th Century Nightlife" which I hope to finish finally this coming week after it sitting on my bench for…See More
