Artist Statement

This work is driven by a deep personal interest in the science of stones, rocks, geologic process and the shaping of the physical earth. There is spirituality as well as beauty in something so magnificent and so unspectacular as the earth beneath our feet. Rocks, sand, and dirt can convey a sense of sacred space. A stone worn smooth by the tides can be soothing to the soul as well as the hand.

Spirituality dwells in the very act of making. If one is open to it, each part of the creative process can be a step in the long inner journey towards transcendence. Repetitive action becomes meditation; each piece becomes a prayer. This work is a reflection of my own inner journey, a consecration of both the mundane and profound, and my search for transcendence.

Hot Under the Collar: A Survey of Contemporary Necklaces

Choker, collar, lariat, torque, pendant, the necklace is one of the most diverse formats available to metalsmiths today. Whether cascading down the front, or draped down the back, the possibilities are nearly endless. The human torso provides us with one of our largest canvases, while still keeping body as site.

ECU Symposium

Posted on January 18, 2010 at 8:43pm 0 Comments

What a weekend! We had our long awaited symposium "Material Topics" this weekend. We had metals students from University, Appalachian State, Winthrop, VCU, and even someone from SCAD. Of course there were a ton of ECU people, even some from outside the metals department. We even had alumni and some community members from outside the university. I think our final count was up around 100 people!

The whole thing kicked off Friday night with an opening for a fantastic show between ECU… Continue

Hi Liz,

Great work!!! It's nice to see how your work has changed since your days at Kent State. Are you still making jewelry with pond scum?

Cheers
Michelle

Dear Liz:

Welcome to crafthaus ! I am glad you joined us.

There is always a lot of activity on the site, so it would be great if you could upload some images of your work for all of us to see. When you do so, please upload the pictures via the PHOTO link on the main webpage. That way your images appear in the main slide show and on your personal page. Thank you.

Also, please feel free to add your comments to the blog/discussion topics that are already posted. Of course, if there is something else you'd much rather talk about, please add that to the site so that the rest of us can chime in.

I really hope you will enjoy being with this network and find the exchanges interesting and fun. The more you put into it, the more you will get out of it, for sure.

If there are ever any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to email me anytime. I will do my best to be of help.

Again: Welcome !

Interviewing NCECA 2013 Emerging Artist Linda Swanson

NCECA 2013 Emerging Artist Linda Swanson makes us think about ceramic materials in a new and dynamic way.  Her installation, site specific, fired and unfired work all has an emphasis on time, material and transformation.  Linda generously shared her time and thoughts with me about her current studio practice and the path that has led her there.  I hope you enjoy this interview with Linda Swanson.  You can see more of her work at: …See More
