The Sporadic Work Journal of an Aficionado

The Sporadic Chronicle was created to document projects completed by Angelina Ciulik. The projects in the following discussions may be for some of the world’s top entertainers, or they may something sophisticated for Aficionado Studios. Either way, I would like to share them with you.  But who am I?

Tools for Sophistication, The Cigarette Holder

My name is Angelina, and upon receiving my dual BFA degree in Drawing & Painting and Metals & Jewelry from CSULB, I began my search for a position that would allow me to expand my skills and challenge my acuity. I was fortunate to quickly find work in the jewelry industry designing and overseeing production. While seeing the back-end of the industry was enlightening, to say the least, it didn’t fully utilize my metalworking experience. I landed a position working with Michael Schmidt Studios’ team of talented artisans, which has strengthened my abilities and continues to challenge me.

Tools for Sophistication, The Moustache and Monocle

Although the work that I do for the entertainment industry is exciting, my passion lies in the work that I do for my jewelry line, art/novelty line, and fine art under the guise Aficionado Studios.

So, metalsmith trying to turn wordsmith here... I would like to extend an invitation to you to read my work journal.  Please, follow me on this journey.

The MASSC Jewelry Challenge

Started by Angelina Ciulik Jul 22. 0 Replies

The Metal Arts Society of Southern California invited its membership to enter into a jewelry challenge as an avenue to participate and push themselves. Each of the participants received identical kits with materials which in the end would be bent, hammered, stretched, soldered, riveted and morphed into the finished pieces. They were given a timeline of 6 weeks to complete and return the finished piece. Photos were taken of everybody’s pieces and a luncheon was held for the members to vote on…Continue

Hey Hey. A LOT has been going on so it's hard to pick what to update you on first ;)I guess I'll reach back a bit. Sometimes being a busy busy designer like Michael Schmidt means that you have to delegate and rely on your team from far away. –Michael was in New York the week this project was brought to us [thank goodness for Skype!]. This is a hammered aluminum neckpiece that Cher used in her newest music video "Woman's World."…Continue

Today we will walk through the making of the Aficionado Studios Detachable Re-attachable MAGIC Moustache, which is a plastic novelty brooch with a neodymium, or “rare earth,” magnet inside. The secret to this parlor trick is a second magnet concealed in the wearers mouth, between the upper front teeth and upper lip. *…Continue

The Aficionado’s Day Job: Whole Foods – Knotted Rope Installation

Started by Angelina Ciulik Nov 4, 2012. 0 Replies

I rather enjoy that my job brings new and exciting experiences. This is one of the benefits of working with Michael Schmidt Studios, as the jobs are usually of interest and challenging. For our most recent endeavor, I’ve taken up “rope-smithing.”Below is a photograph of the knotted rope sculpture Michael Schmidt designed for the new Whole Foods at Fashion Island, Newport Beach, CA.…Continue

Hallowe'en Post

Last day of October and spooky hallowe'en is here again. I've never much bothered with the festival as I'm not much of a horror fan but this year I've been paying a bit more attention and have been finding it quite funny, especially the non-gendered gingerbread person biscuits which one of the fashion students had iced to look like skeletons:…See More

Takahiro Iwasaki - Miniature Scenes made of Fibers, Dust & Hair

The only place for cloth fibers, human hair and dust in my home is the vacuum cleaner, but that's not the case for Japanese artist Takahiro Iwasaki, who loves to use them to create detailed miniature scenes that depict Japan's industrial…See More

A modern metalsmith/metal artist can be found working in traditional metals as well as in nontraditional materials. The designs can range from the classic to the extravagant, and the techniques can either be centuries old or decidedly current.

The wide range of expression preferences, design options, materials, and processes has lead within our field to unfavorable misconceptions, misunderstandings and in some cases even outright disdain between artists. Can the metal and jewelry field overcome its division and send out a much-needed signal?

We appreciate and respect our historical past and acknowledge that current materials have a rightful place in jewelry/object making!
