Just had the most horribly non-achieving week. Everything I tried to do ended in problems which can only be solved by waiting for tools and materials to be delivered. Bah!

Just got back from Edinburgh where I met up with fellow Crafthaus member,
Yi Liu, where we discussed a possible collaboration in the spring. Unfortunately, it was only a short meeting but we chatted about loads of things and arranged to meet again in Birmingham for Spring Fair and to actually get to work on something then. Here he is with some of his work:…

The end of the week. I've finished all my work for the exhibition and have started making the boxes - from old cigar boxes (which I get from a tobacco merchant in Edinburgh, not by smoking!) - for the pieces. Next week, I will be in Brighton to recharge the batteries and to work on an idea which has been obsessing me for quite a while: a box/pendant on the theme of "Cold Genius" based on the ideas from Act III, Scene II of Purcell's opera "King Arthur". For those who are interested, I've posted…

After the thrilling storm of international politics at the weekend!
Finally finished the 15th piece for the show in Wales next month:
Made from discarded sewing-machine needles found in a derelict sweatshop in Clydebank, Scotland, silver, psilomelane, natural black spinel and quartz.…

Further to my last post, I received the following mail which repudiates the information I posted about the work of Nicolas Estrada, which I published in good faith from information given to me by him. I have received an email from the curator of this show asking me very specifically to remove the erroneous information from the blog entry and to remove any details about the misunderstanding too.… Continue

Further Update: to ensure that there is no reflection on either the Exhibition concerned or on Crafthaus, I have removed my original text at the request of the Curator of the exhibition.…

Strange day today: some things good, some bad, "good, in parts"!
Bad: my microwelder (hydro-flame) broke down; someone stole my tube-cutter; one of the students has hacked a coil of wire into multiple lengths as they were too lazy to look for the end.
Good: I finished a bangle -
Made from iron nail, silver,…

Just back from a long and relaxing weekend in Brighton with a brief sojourn to London, primarily to see the David Watkins exhibition at the V&A.
The Watkins exhibition was a touch disappointing as there wasn't very much in it, perhaps 20 - 30 pieces, all jewellery but the Silver Gallery and the jewellery collection at the V&A never fails to please.
Some photographs from this visit:…

Finally finished my ring, "Trouble With Lichen", made from the corroded push-rods of a Ford Fairlane, found in a river at Campo Ligure, Italy. It is not a typical piece. I think that this is because I did almost no preparatory drawings for it and it came almost directly from the form of the material and the stones chosen for it.
The cups are set with tsavorite and…

Definitely the oddest thing I've ever made!
Now to polish, set and patinate it:

This is shaping up to be one of the oddest pieces I've ever made!
The roster of stones is now: brown diamond, tsavorite, demantoid, spessarite, peridot, nephrite, tourmaline and andalusite.

A while back, a friend of mine in Italy found an old car engine in a river. It had been there some time and was very corroded:
He sent me these bits from it:
And today, I finally started work on a piece using…

Finally completed a piece I've had sitting about for a couple of months, the collar "Hymn To Amun-Ra":
Made from the brake pad of a Cessna aircraft, kevlar/steel composite from a bullet-proof vest factory, silver, enamel, blue topaz, lapis-lazuli, magnets and a 3d-printed scarab.
I was very uncomfortable about the "Egyptian" theme…

Completed a trio of cufflinks today. These are a bit of a "bread and butter" line for me and one of the few things I get to make fairly regularly.
The rigid "bean" backs are really easy to get in and out of shirts and don't break. Set with a red zircon, chrome green tourmaline and blue topaz. The nuts and bolt-heads were all found…

I didn't realise that there was a blog facility on here! Instead of commenting on my own comment wall, this makes a lot more sense.
Just completed a collar for an exhibition at Llantarnam Grange in Wales in November:…
